Ariel had discovered this place entirely by accident. This giant city hidden in some air tight bubble deep beneath the surface, where no mermaid has ever swam this far before.
A pretty woman with white hair had found her on the shore. Ariel had not been stranded, per se, but found it difficult to try and explore this place without any legs like she had.
Kida, she was named, wrapped her arms around her waist and hauled her up, gently dragging her to the nearest, largest rock. Ariel sat atop it, amazed at this girl's strength. She noticed that she had white and blue markings smeared across her.
Kida asked if Ariel was a human. Ariel shook her head and told her she was not. She then asked Kida the same question. Kida nodded and told her she was. She then looked sad. Kida went on to tell her that there was not many of her people left. That they were dying.
Ariel gasped, covering her mouth with her hand, inquiring if was from a disease.
Kida shook her head, then proceeded to tell Ariel it wasn't a disease, it was their culture, their language that was dying. But, that when someone actually did die, their children knew less and less.
Ariel looked down at the sand, not sure what to say. It was something she had never thought about. Something that could happen to her own kind.
Ariel looked at Kida. She stared back.
