In the Palace in Theed, a huge hearth was filled, then burned down to coals, upon the shortest day of the year. The Queen waited, wrapped in a robe of purest black and jet, until midnight. Then the robe was lifted away from her nakedness by Handmaidens, and in special high pattens she strode accross the coals. All around Naboo, zealots were imitating her, some with nothing on their feet at all.
Once again her Handmaidens wrapped her, this time in a robe of purest white and zircon. The coals were distributed to every province, kindling the fires of the new year. This was the custom of Dividing the Fire.
It was Amidala's innovation to have the Handmaidens in the robes, with her, while waiting.
