“Reunion”
Ten years after leaving Ohtori Academy, Utena opened her front door to find Anthy waiting for her with a placid smile and bottomless eyes behind round rimmed glasses. Her dark purple hair was unbound and gathered in waves behind her shoulders, and for a moment it made Utena’s soul shudder.
“Utena-sama,” Anthy said as cold and congenially as she had ten years ago.
“Himemiya.”
The women stood facing each other of a few frozen seconds, then Utena hugged Anthy impulsively in the doorway.
“Right on time, Himemiya,” Utena said, forcing down the sob beginning in her throat. She let go of her friend, and smiled at her. “Come in, I’ll make tea.”
“Shall I make shaved ice, Utena-sama?” Anthy asked with a wave of humor in her voice.
“It wouldn’t be a reunion without it,” Utena replied, then stopped. “Where’s Chu-Chu?”
Anthy unclasped her slim, pale pink handbag. First the round, bluish ears popped out, and soon Chu-Chu’s big eyes were staring at her. “Chu-Chu!” he squeaked.
Utena leaned in and scooped up Chu-Chu into her hands. She turned towards the kitchen, getting reacquainted with the little creature while Anthy trailed behind, shutting the door.
The house was quiet, sunny, and messy. Utena looked back to see Anthy standing in the living room, clutching her purse with two hands as she looked around. She came into the kitchen as Utena put a dented aluminum kettle on the stovetop and pulled two mugs out of a cupboard. One was white with a blue duck on the side, the other green with a cupcake and the word “chocolate” in English.
“You moved very far away, Utena-sama. I did not think it would really take me ten years to find you. If you hadn’t come to America, I would have found you sooner.”
Utena avoided Anthy’s eyes as she spooned tea leaves into the cups. “I finished school in Japan, far away from where Ohtori was, but then…” she shrugged. “I needed to put Ohtori Academy on the other side of the world from me.”
“Utena-sama, do you mean the school or do you mean me?” Anthy asked without emotion.
Utena ran a hand though her pink, cropped-short hair. If her white wife-beater hadn’t been so tight, one might have suspected she was a boy. “Himemiya…I don’t…I don’t remember everything that happened when I left. I know it involved you, and your brother.” She bit her lip. “I remember waking up outside the academy, and bits and pieces of that last year of school.”
Anthy had expected this would happen. “Do you remember the duels, about me being the Rose Bride? I am still your bride, Utena-sama.” Anthy laid her purse on the countertop and came closer to Utena. Reaching around, Anthy laid her hand against the cloth of the shirt, right above a scar. “Do you remember when I didn’t believe you could be my prince?”
Utena backed away, out of Anthy’s reach. She shook her head, and then turned the rose signet ring on her finger. She didn’t remember what happened, not really; but now things from the past were slowly surfacing, dreams that became memory. Utena felt her back for the scar.
“You betrayed me, Himemiya,” she said.
Anthy blinked. “I was wrong. You saved me. You made me save myself. Everything changed.”
“You’re a witch.”
Anthy lowered her head. “I am.”
Utena looked remorseful, and rubbed the back of her neck. “Ah, our reunion is getting a little downbeat. Didn’t we say we were going to laugh and drink tea?”
Anthy looked at her, and slowly smiled. “Yes, Utena-sama.” She turned to the freezer and took out a small block of ice. “It’s as if you were expecting me.”
“Maybe I was.” Something caught Utena’s eye. “Chu-Chu! Get out of the sugar bowl right now!” She was laughing as she plucked the little guy, ear-first, out of the sugar.
“Chu-Chu!”
Hours passed as the two women caught up on the last ten years of their lives. Utena talked about how she had taken the last of the money from her parent’s inheritance and lived on it, traveling the United States in a van; soon she began settling in towns and doing easy jobs, like waitressing. After a while, she got to know the people and their problems, and she wanted to help them. So she did one way or another-now she was an investigator for the local police department.
“You became a prince, Utena-sama?” Anthy asked.
Utena rubbed the back of her neck again. “Eh, I suppose you could say that.”
She told Anthy about the girls she rescued, and the ones she fell in love with, blushing as she admitted she hadn’t turned out into such a normal girl after all.
“Are you seeing anyone now?” Anthy asked.
Utena sighed. “Stephanie left me yesterday. She said I was emotionally cut off.”
“I am sorry, Utena-sama.” Anthy took her hand and held it in her own.
Anthy’s hand felt cool, and dry, and Utena couldn’t tell whether she enjoyed touching it or not. She looked at Chu-Chu, snoring contentedly on a pile of cookies, and then said, “Um…tell me about what you’ve been up to, Himemiya.”
Anthy’s life had been curiously empty. She had become a florist in Tokyo, growing exquisite roses. And she had searched for Utena; that was all.
“You haven’t fallen in love Himemiya, in all these years?”
Anthy paused before she said, “I have been in love. I have not been able to forget her-my prince.”
Neither girl moved, until Utena moved deliberately and determined to Anthy and kissed her. “Oh Anthy,” she murmured.
Anthy’s kisses tasted of roses and something bitter underneath, and Utena loved it. She put an arm around Anthy’s waist as Anthy wrapped her arm around Utena’s neck. They were close, and kissing, and Utena felt breathless-some knot at the pit of her stomach was suddenly coming undone, and she knew that every girl she’d loved until now had just been filling the time, waiting for her Rose Bride.
She started walking backwards to the bedroom, bringing Anthy along with her. They pulled off each other’s clothes and dropped them along the way. They were both topless by the time they reached the bed. As Anthy unzipped Utena’s jeans, Utena caressed Anthy’s breasts; they were full and a dusky shade of brown, and she bent down to kiss them as she kicked off her pants.
Anthy gently pushed Utena’s shoulders so she sat down on the bed, then undid a button on her skirt and let it drop to the floor. “Do I please you, Utena-sama?”
Utena grabbed Anthy’s hands and pulled her down on top of her, then flipped her so that she lay on her back. “You are perfect, Anthy, you’re beautiful.”
Anthy smiled, the way Utena always remembered her smiles; sweet, with her eyes squeezed shut as if she was glad to have pleased you. Utena had to kiss her eyelids. She kissed her mouth and their hands began caressing each other.
“I don’t care about what you did, Anthy, I don’t care about what happened.” Utena kissed her in successive little kisses. “I love you, I missed you.”
“I missed you too…Utena.”
