We are your overlords...

It's 10:30 on a cold, rainy Thursday and I really should be doing the reading I need to finish in order to start writing the 5-page paper that's due tomorrow, but instead I'm curled up on the couch with three kittens cuddled sweetly around me, all purring like mad, and to be honest, there's no place in the world I'd rather be ( Read more... )

I totally understand. I also grew up on a small, non-commercial farm and animals died all the time. I sold sheep that I raised from lambs into slaughter, we ate pigs we raised, etc. I'm now a vegetarian. Ha!

But I'm gone for over 12 hours some days and I do worry about my cat. I used to have two cats, but Acacia died this spring and now Zephyr, my remaining cat, is going crazy by himself. But I really do not want another cat at this point in my life.

Poor Zephyr.

It's really amazing--I went from being so pragmatic about animals and their ability to take care of themselves to fretting over leaving the little beasts alone for a few hours lest they get lonely. Or bored. I think them being bored is probably worse.

Poor Zephyr! That's so sad--but maybe he'll settle into being a solitary cat? I had a cat once who did that--once he realized it meant he got all the attention. :)

I hear you about the worrying. If I'm half asleep, and I hear Luna meow and it sounds distressing, I literally leap out of bed to search for her to make sure she's okay. Usually, she's found in the library, sitting on the arm of the couch, head tilted slightly as if to say 'What's up?'

Then, I scowl and go back to bed, but at least I can SLEEP! lol I'm always afraid she's going to fall in between something and the wall, unable to get out on her own. Paranoid? Yes. But I'm okay with that. Usually.

Oh, God, I'm completely paranoid about Pansy. Draco and Imogen are pretty safety-conscious for the most part, but Pans? Has no fear of ANYTHING. We're in a second-floor walkup and we have a bannister in our living room that overlooks the stairs coming up from the front door. Pans loves to perch on it and lean over to watch the stairs, especially if Draco and Immy are running up and down like they enjoy doing. The number of times she's lost her balance and nearly fallen--God, It gives me a heart attack every time, even though I know if she falls she'll be fine. Still. I hate it when she does that. /0\

Ahh. I love the name Pans. I need a new pet so I can name her Pansy. I kept buying beta fish, and renaming them Ginny since I'm a huge Ginn fan (I feel like I'm the only one!!!) and they kept dying every few weeks. lol.

And I get you about the almost falling. When I used to live with my parents a few years ago, Luna would race up the stairs, jump up into the hollowed out alcove that ran along the wall into the kitchen, and she'd RACE across the beam that would be the 'door way' into the kitchen. There were a few scratch marks, three there were DEEP. One day, we all noticed that she didn't go up there. We figured she'd fallen, do the the deep scratches left in the wall. Poor thing. After a few months, she'd be up there again, but she was a lot more careful.

We used to have the exact same set-up; a split level where the staircase to the basement was right inside of the front door, and Mitzi used to perch there. She was always fine when she tumbled, but for her dignity! We also used to have a grand piano sitting right near the top of the stairs and Mocha would jump on it and slide and launch himself into mid-air! Did you know cats have a funny bone in their front leg? I'll tell you the story of the midnight run to the vet sometime.... Dorks.

Oh, man, I'm with you 100% here. Just got a new kitten a few months ago (she's 7 months old now), and having only had dogs in my lifetime, I was completely new to the cat thing. I'd always had a mild distaste for cats because of things I'd heard (they'll claw at you and scratch up all the furniture and snub you and spray everywhere), and I've found nothing to be farther from the truth.

She's the most delightful pet ever, so much more fun and entertaining and snuggly than my dogs have been (I guess I should say she's cute in different ways). And the purring! It's like a little motorboat. And as long as she has her scratching post, she doesn't scratch the furniture, and I can't see her ever intentionally hurting someone.

Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying your kittens! (And their funny names.) I just have to say take as many pics of them as tiny little things as you can because it only lasts a few months before they look very adult and serene! :)

:D Don't feel bad - who wouldn't love kittens?? Isn't Science constantly coming up with research results announcing how healthful pets are? :D
