No, that's the weird bit (ok it was all weird)- it was third person. "Scully knew that her brain was sending blah blah signals to her genitals" etc etc. I was like...are we kidding? Is this supposed to be sexy? Turns out, we were not in fact kidding. *hands*

The crackiest thing about it is that I am playing it straight - as in it's not acrackfic where hank writes x files fanfic, it's the sekrit self-indulgent imaginings of a boy who escaped into too many Bogart movies & Raymond Chandler novels & Twilight Zone eps before growing up into a self- styled Literary Bad Boy.

But then! After the birth of Becca, he returns to his alter ego, scribbling its and pieces while the baby's asleep and Karen's at work, idly thinking it'll be an escape from the pressures of ball & chain fatherhood and the success of his short stories and the Novel he can't quite finish. A handsome, charming outcast alone in the bowels of the FBI with only his Quest for company, but it turns out that his need for a steadying female counterpoint invades his boyhood fantasy and Scully just refuses to conform to the limitations of the Femme Fatale archetype. Because naturally, she is as obstinant as all of his favorite women.

He sometimes toys with the idea of publishing under a pulp fiction pseudonym until...

Speaking of, I’m think of making a recs list for other people like me who were fans of the show before they got into “fandom.” Or fics that are legible for people who haven’t watched the show in awhile (so no episode tags, etc.). OR, fics written during later seasons or post-series. Because I’m finding that similar to my experience entering Buffy fandom during season 6, it’s harder to get into stories that ended up getting Jossed (Cartered?).

I'd be interested in seeing those recs--in fact, I wish you'd put some of them in the queue at xf_book_club. I. Someone (maybe at TWOP?) awhile back asked for something similar. They had other stipulations which complicated matters so I couldn't come up with much. But then I started reading the fic before I'd seen an episode so I guess my experience was the opposite of yours. Maybe I was lucky because I

Hello, hello! (yes, I know that I've now replied to some of your other comments elsewhere, but on your timeline, this is where we "meet.")

I've been meaning to tell how just how helpful your recs & other fan-labor has been for me in navigating my strangely delayed venture into X-Files fandom. The book club and its "humor" tag, especially! When I do get around to compiling my recs list(s) I will make sure to check and see if I've got some faves that haven't been discussed over there yet.

As for my Californication-Files fic, it's still percolating - I have some targeted Californication re-watching to do, mostly the episodes with flashbacks. And I'm trying to navigate how close to X-Files canon Hank's stories will be, since part of what inspired the idea is the theme of literary-to-film adaptation (and its discontents) in Californication. But the ships present in the story so far are Hank/Karen & Mulder/Scully, because the way I'm thinking of it, Mulder is Hank's Mary Sue, who gains unanticipated depths (and heights) of character.
