I find that people really don't have a good concept of how much work goes into anything creative. "You're a designer? Great. You can build my website. For free." People don't appreciate hand knits. People don't want a jar of jam as a gift because they can just get some at the store. And that attitude definitely seems to carry over into knitting patterns; Everything should be free because people don't understand the work required.
I do agree that most for purchase patterns are better written, but definitely not all. And I also feel like there's so much replication of design ideas, that it's hard to want to pay $10 for a sweater pattern when there's another pattern that's nearly identical and free.
In general, though, I just agree with everything you said. ;)
My sister has a coworker who keeps asking her to knit stuff for her. "When are you going to make me a shawl like that? Make me a sweater, etc." Like, OMG, how about you come over and clean my house for a month? no? It's about the same amount of work, chica!
Or my favorite "But you like sewing so it'd be easy for you to do..." doesn't mean it still isn't work and time I could've spent sewing for *me*. Oops, sorry... ranting! clearly you hit a button, heh ;)
And because I LIKE doing it, I want to continue to LIKE doing it. So I do what _I_ like, and not what other people want me to do. Which isn't to say that I won't pick out the occasional pattern that I'm not that fond of to make for somebody I really like or appreciate. I tend to do small, but intricate pieces for the girls' teachers at Christmas. One of them nearly fainted dead away. Consider THAT gift appreciated

Most of the time. Some of them are a little pricey, but you have to decide what it's worth to you. My current favorite designer has developed an evil plot. She releases "collections" in .pdf format. Usually you'll get 3 or 4 patterns, that are also available separately, plus ONE that's exclusive to the collection. The collections of 4 patterns are usually the same price as three separate patterns. It's FIENDISH. Of COURSE I buy the collection!! Usually, the exclusive pattern is my favorite. She has THREE new collections launching this summer, all based on Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. ARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

And let's face it, the patterns aren't that expensive. Like, that's two latte's, make your own coffee this week and you got the money back, yo.
