" North Country Review"

Oct 22, 2005 22:31

I saw " North Country" tonight. It has to be one of the best movies that I have seen in a long time. I don't want to spoil it here for anyone. But I found it to be really empowering. Does anyone know anything about the case it was based on?

Can you please tell me what you know? I am planning on doing a paper on it.

I mean this in the nicest possible way.

You can't possibly cite me as a source on your paper (unless you want to put "random internet girl" in your footnotes). Why don't you start by googling the case? Also, with the movie coming out, I'm sure there are several magazine and newspaper articles that could help you find accounts of the case and sources for more informatiion. I personally read about the case in a book about sexual harrassment law that I checked out of the library.

By researching this subject yourself you are going to get so much more out of the experience than you would if I just told you what I knew. raanve included the actual name of the case in her comment. Have fun!

This is not appropriate forum to fish for information for a research paper. As janejellyroll stated below, you can Google for a headstart; the fourth hit on Google is for the IMDB listing of North Country, which specifically states the court case that the movie was loosely based on.

We have no problem if you would like discuss the film, but please do not attempt to circumvent our rules within comments.

I probably shouldn't, but I have to point out that this isn't really a "review"... what did you think of it, besides "it has to be one of the best movies that I have seen in a long time"? Did it give you any food for thought? Was the film problematic in any way? Etc, etc. If you are worried about spoilers, just put them behind an LJ-cut.

Does anyone know anything about the case it was based on?

I'm sure lots of people do... like a bunch of reporters, Clara Bingham (the woman who wrote the book that the screenplay was based on), some legal scholars, and anyone who takes the time to Google the case that the movie was based on (Jenson vs. Eveleth Taconite Co.).

i must repeat the request that you research this for yourself. i'm quite positive the histories and stories you discover will be amazing and complex; far more complex than any one of us could ever hope to encapsulate in a response to your post.

I think people misunderstood what I meant. I was wondering what does everyone know about this case and they can share their opinions on it. I just wanted some input. I don't know exactly what I want to do yet. But I love hearing from fellow feminists on what they hear.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I don't think I misunderstood what you meant. But it will be more productive (for your paper and for discussion in this community) if you do some research, form your own opinions and then come back and make a post with specific issues to debate. Just making a post saying "tell me what you know and think about issue x" doesn't really promote community discussion or your own knowledge of feminism.

In a feminist community, I'm not sure you'll get any differing opinions on the case, exactly. Members of this community differ in a lot of ways, but, basically, what do you think people would say other than, "It changed sexual harassment law and furthered the feminist cause in the workplace."? No one here will disagree with that, or think the case was a bad thing for feminism.

Also, I'd like to know more about what you thought about the movie. A male friend of mine saw it and said it was amazing. What was the story like? Was the script good? The acting? The directing? The message? What other movies/types of movies do you like? What movies did it remind you of?

I saw it last night (on 10/22) and it was terrific - I cried at the end. And you're right, it was terribly empowering.
