Hi everyone. I'm not a regular poster but I read this today and wanted to share it. Male magazines are one of things that get me absolutely fuming, and this very good article about them set me off.http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1596384,00.html

media, pop culture, sex and sexuality, magazines

PS - does anyone know anything about an extremely homophobic game on FHM online?

I hate mens mags. My fiance brought an FHM home from work one day and we both read it together. It made me laugh... but not in the way it intended! I laugh at how juvenille it was! Safe to say we never bought a lads mag agian

I love british cynicism...this article is no different!
UK treatment of women in mags isn't much off of America's. These women are willing to degrade themselves and these mags are willing to profit.
Pornography is a word some wannabe feminists use to lash about with...hilarious.
But, its a red herring...pornography refers to the enslavement of women and should be used to describe violent material.
I don't see much wrong with erotic stuff. Men buy it, women buy less of it. Thats how its marketed and how investment in it is steered.
The author was so sarcastic...tongue and cheek, which I don't think some of the people who've posted actually caught.

Yes, she was being sarky. She was being sarky about the idea that she should just get over it. All that "Oh, those quaint brits!" shit pisses me off.

The ads for one of the magazines mentioned is totally sexist and idiotic. It features women fucking up at things that we supposedly can't do like drilling a hole in the wall; fixing a radiator and popping the bonnet of a car open. Then big letters flash up and an obnoxious voiceover says "Women! Don't expect any help on a Thursday!" Ha. Ha. Ha. I don't care how many of the editors and contributors say "Oh, it's just a harmless bit of fun! This is how women live now!", it's stupid sexist shit and it's not realistic at all.

Oh sure, I agree with crticizing the media's raunchy description of women and trivilization of feminism...but I was reflecting on the exagerations in the other comments.

A typical sex Q&A feature in Zoo had four questions about how to persuade a reluctant woman to have anal sex, three on how to get her to watch hard-core porn and "How can I get my girlfriend to give me deep throat?"

that part made me especially nauseous... is actual consent and choice not a part of sex anymore or what??

I don't know much about the British beasties, but as far as I'm concerned, Maxim and FHM and Ramp are just the male-oriented equivalent of Cosmopolitan -- thick glossies dedicated to selling people lots and lots of ads and extremely distorted expectations.
