First of all, I'm so glad Richard came through that way -- I don't want him to be sympathetic, because, really, in the plays, he's a horrible human being. But...well, there you go. Also, between what the RSC version did with his relationship with York in the Henry VIs and what the McKellen film did with his relationship with the Duchess, there seemed so much behind what few interactions he has with his parents. And Cecily herself is such an enigma within the plays -- it bothers me that she's not in the Henry VIs, though I can conceptually understand why for any number of reasons. She'd have been such an interesting foil for Margaret, I think.
I'm very glad you enjoyed!

I have the screenplay for the McKellen version, and in his essay at the beginning, he talks about how excising Margaret (for time and audience reasons) allowed him to give some of her lines to the Duchess and heighten the tension between her and Richard. Poor Richard and his many, many issues.
