You do a wonderful job of capturing the characters here--Ginny is heartbreaking. And the thing that comes through most strongly is the incredible, joyful ambivalence of parenthood. :-)

Lovely!

Thank you!! :D I'm so glad you appreciated it. And that's such an apt description for it: 'the incredible, joyful ambivalence of parenthood'; I think my favorite descriptive phrase here in that vein, though used for the family, was ...bloody exhausting. Beautiful, but insane...

Hee. I used to think parents looked like parents because they were old. I now understand that it's because they're parents. ;-)

I liked this, the setup, the difficulty of her decision, and all her colorful family at the reunion. But I'm left wondering a little, what happened to Ginny's fierceness and playfulness? Sort-of-parenthood seems to have transformed her into more of a generic loving mother figure. How would the story have been different if it had been, say, Ginny who was taken and Hermione who survived?

Does that make any sense at all?

Yes, and thanks for the thoughtful response.

Ginny on the other hand, I see as personally tougher; she's broken up about all of it, severely, but determined to keep her shit together and be as normal as possible for Tristan, even if sometimes she feels not at all together.

That, at least, seems very in-character for Ginny.

when you're with them, it's like being a slightly different, more responsible version of yourself, and your personality shines through in the small interactions rather than in the big, sweeping gestures.

That's not really how it feels for me - I mean, I'm sure I act differently in some ways than I did before becoming a parent, at least in trying not to set a bad example in front of the kids, but size of gestures? But I can imagine that it hits different people differently.

Hey, that's me. I'm a giver. ;))

It may also be that I'm not the most delicate woman that ever lived sometimes, so for me, being around my son involves reigning in the sarcasm, wildness and potty mouth just enough to not scar him for life. But maybe I did phrase that a little incorrectly as well, since I have been known to be apprropriately nutty with my kid; maybe what I should have said was that it's not always large gestures, but it's always there under the surface.

They say you should write what you know about. The relationship of Tristan and Ginny is so real here - so firm. They are not characters - but people.

I am completely choked up. I loved it. I wish I was a parent so I could know it as well as you do.

The rest of the story was fricking good too...
