The best laid plans

First things first, thank you everyone who pledged in the WSKG one day pledge drive. I was impressed. I did not think they would make it, but they actually overshot their goal of 600 people. Not so bad. Actually one of my co-workers volunteered for this. Well, not so much co-worker as he works in a different building with completely ( Read more... )

Jobs are good to have. Unless you work for a shoddy writing center that won't begin giving you hours for two weeks which means you won't see a pay check for another two weeks which means you have four weeks to live on $9.... Also, Maos eat mousies; scary good job.

Oooooo! Nice alliteration! Maos eat mousies. I should put that on a t-shirt or something.
That really is not so good with the writing cetner. I mean, the job itself sound pretty damn cool, but you sort of need hours. Have you thought about doubling up at the Computer Lab? I think there should be a lab Swetman. Its sort of going over to the dark side in terms of your major, but might be interesting. I used to work in the Snygg and Mahar labs. Not a overly hard job and kind of interesting.

Swetman's being remodeled and the comp lab in Poucher won't open for two weeks anyway. I'll just sit on my hands. Ain't no thang. Thanks for the advice, though.

About a year ago we permanently hired a long-term temp who had been working for us on a year-long project. Guy had been a system admin in a previous life, but on a non-Windows platform. Really nice guy, but he's on the toe of the learning curve when it comes to Windows. Problem is, he THINKS like an experienced sys admin, without the experience/knowledge. He & I have bumped heads numerous times on issues where I knew he was wrong, but he wouldn't defer to my expertise. Learning to deal with such people is an ongoing process. Keeps it interesting, eh?

You know it. I am fortunate as this guy is not so presumpous as your guy. That is a tough siuation. This guy that I work with rather easy to get along with. In fact, he often deferrs to my knowledge, such as it is. It's weird. I keep wanting ask him why he listens to me, what the hell do I know. :)
