I tried all the usual natural remedies for a week before I gave up and went to a doctor.

Did you try first by 'flushing' your system? Like when you feel it coming drinking one liter water/tea/apple juice an hour one whole (at least) day? Yeah I know you have to run *all* the time but it's worth it in my opinion. Have used this remedy a couple of times, worked! But have to start really early...
