My take on how Sherlock turned out the way he did was alienating his classmates, or them him, by being so blunt with pointing out things to them. The tricks were fun in earlier grades, but not so much later on in the teens.
Death of the only person who understood him, his mother. Resentment toward Mycroft...etc.
And the song totally applies! :)
