It's been a quiet week. I've been even more in my shell than usual lately -- just feeling introverted. I'm sorry for having disappeared entirely from cyberspace in that time. I'm feeling flu-ish today, and the weather outside is balmy -- -15 Celsius downtown, going down to -38 Celsius (no windchill) in some of the suburbs.

I've been reading ( Read more... )

I never do well in these memes, not because I don't read a lot but because modern American literature doesn't interest me very much and that's what these list are mostly. Most of what I've read is from before the 19th century on another continent. ^_^

Glad your novels progressing. Like H, I hope to read it one day. ^_^

Funny how badly we lit students do on this. Though I bet most people would do badly if you threw The Tale of Genji to the list.

I'm trying to get it finished, though today was the first time since I started this econd rewrite that I've pulled my usual standard of 2000 words :/

Seriously dude, you need to read the Talmud. Car chases, conspiracy theories, erotic thrills, deep philosophical musings; that book has it all.

note: all or some of the above may be a terrible lieAs for gayness being a "phase": Consider that MOST of the population has had gay feelings or fantasies at some point in their lives. MOST people are heterosexual. When you are speaking to a wide audience, it's a pretty safe bet to tell kids that their feelings don't make them gay. I am not trying to dismiss your experience, I'm just alarmed that you are advocating censorship of a book for a mostly innocent - and in most cases, reasonable - comment. I wish that they had put in something like; "Remember that homosexuality is a valid and healthy expression of human sexuality, and if you suspect that you might be gay, you can seek out peer groups in your area and/or find someone trustworthy and supportive to talk to." But parents might see that as "promoting homosexuality". THOSE are the people who make the queers of the world want to be ( ... )

First of all, I've always been suspicious of the "just a phase" idea. Most of the guys I knew who went through "phases" in high school later came out. One is the most obvious closet-case anybody knows ( ... )

As for those lines, they could be removed and apparently they were -- the edition Matt read probably five years later did not include them.

That's what I was hoping for. I suspected it was the case, but I couldn't prove it, since I don't have any copies - not even the one my mom gave to me when I was growing up.

I suspect a good 80% of society is really some degree on the scale of bisexual.

I agree, but I think that many of those people could honestly and truly be happy never having an SS relationship their entire lives. That's the most important thing - creating a society that produces happy, functional people who in their own turn make the world a good place to live. I don't see any special virtue in increasing the total amount of queerness in the world.

Ann Landers was roundly denounced by the queer press for repreatedly telling parents not to worry -- that their childrens' announced homosexuality was only a phase. In my mind, that is a separate issue. When kids are still developing, I don't think it's bad to tell them that they ( ... )
