Fics/PB Question

Jun 11, 2010 15:25

First things first, I'm still working on everyone's fics! It's just taking a while... but keep an eye on jotjunkie . (Or my Dreamwidth.)

Second, has anyone read Perry Moore's Hero? I just re-read it and now I'm thinking I want to play either Scarlett or Typhoid Larry.

books, fic, rp

I read Hero a couple years ago, but I was really disappointed be it, tbqh. That characterizations just seemed really half-assed. And I was really excited about the premise of a gay superhero too, but I felt like the story spent so much time making sure we knew that Thom was gay, that it forgot about everything else going on. Does that make any kind of sense? o_O

No, it makes perfect sense. I felt similarly. While the book is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, because it read exactly like a slash fic with superpowers, that's... not exactly a compliment either. I think the book had a great premise and I thought the characters/world sounded interesting, but it did fall flat on the page. Unless I was supposed to find the subplot with Thom's parents a million times more interesting than the main plot? (Not to mention Thom's Dad. Not that I didn't have sympathy for Thom, but...)

For example -- I'd have like to see less Gayngst and more of Thom bonding with his teammates. Really annoyed me how he didn't seem to care much for them until the end.

I think that's why I'd like to write fic and/or RP the book, though. Like I said, there were a lot of interesting things (beyond the gay superhero hook) in the novel but the excecution could have been much, much better.

Another thought: What happened to Thom's angst about having powers and wanting to be a superhero? Early on, the book emphasized that Thom's dad would be just as disappointed in Thom for playing superhero as he would be over Thom's sexuality.

But... seems like that plotline got dropped with a quickness.

Wow. That's some of the best cosplay I've ever seen! Just like how I always pictured May, squeeeee~

And nice timing, actually, since I just placed a reserve for Darkdevil and C&C and am about 50% done with the app. (I'm also considering Ax at Taxon and Oz... somewhere.)

Oof, I never replied to this? So yeah -- I am too chicken to risk C&C, but am apping Taxon. Eventually. >_>

Sorry! I didn't get this sooner, wtf lj.

I am currently in the process of biting my nails waiting to see if my app gets accepted, so I totally understand how you feel! Who are you thinking of apping at Taxon? I know we've talked about this before but... it's been a while and I'm forgetful.

Me, I'll either app Ax or Oz there, I think. Once I decide. Someday.

I just wanted to inform you of my sudden thought: someone NEEDS to point out Peter Parker's apparent genetic disposition towards redheads. I mean, what are the odds that both Peter and Ben would hook up with redheaded women, amirite?

Peter's redhead fetish is never off-topic. felinephoenix June 22 2010, 01:34:56 UTC
Redheads with family issues, no less. Makes me a little surprised neither of them hooked up with Harry (minus, you know, Harry being dead when Ben was around).

My theory is that there's a hair color fetish in the genes. The specific color may change, but it's always there. Mostly I base this on Peter and Ben plus Mayday's OBVIOUS blonde fetish (Brad, JJ, Franklin, Felicity...).

...and belatedly, I remembered that I should probably have added Reilly to May's list of Blonde Guys She Thinks Is Hot. oh may why

Isn't Reilly a redhead?

Also, we now need to ask ourselves where this gene came from. Was it Richard or Mary who had a thing for brunettes*?

*I can't remember whether Mary is consistently portrayed with black hair or not, though she does have it in Untold Tales -1.
