Parenting classes?

The California State Senate approved SB1421 requiring students starting in the 2009-10 school year to receive instruction in parenting skills before graduating from high school "provided through either a course in home economics or the one-semester course in American government and civics."

The government class is an existing requirement (it's referred to as the one-semester course in American government and civics). The parenting skills content is a new requirement.

Weird. I thought the parenting stuff (like carrying a bag of flour around for a week) was integrated into a home ec class.

I wonder if they dropped a requirement for some other class, or if this just makes it that much harder for some students to graduate.

Was this a required class? Also, note that these laws vary from state to state. Were you thinking of California or elsewhere?
