If it took Cas leading an entire squadron of angels, many of whom were slaughtered in the process, to rescue Dean from Hell, how is SAM supposed to rescue somebody?
Not only that, but the whole, "We can't show Dean's time in Hell. It would be too expensive, and leaving it to your imagination is better." So, they can't share any of Dean's time in Hell because it would be too horrifically expensive, and expensively horrific, but now Sam is going to rescue someone from Hell, and we're going to see it? Bzuh?
So the trials thus far are: 1. Kill a hellhound 2. Rescue an innocent soul from Hell. (Doubly difficult because what's an "innocent" soul doing in Hell to begin with? ETA: I need to stop stumbling upon spoilers. It was suggested that the innocent soul might be Adam. And it certainly looked like Sam was walking past cages. Though wouldn't that mean he'd have to face down Lucifer in The Cage? Ugh. Not gonna think about it.)
So now I'm wondering if the 3rd trial is going to be to close the gates of Hell from the inside, thus trapping in Hell the one doing the closing.
Your suggestion (for #3) makes a lot of sense, storytelling-wise, and I'd buy it 100% - if it weren't *this* show. Where both Sam and Dean have gone to Hell, and Sam's already sacrificed himself once for the Greater Good. So if Show went there again, my eyes would roll right out of my head. Plus, I'm not sure how closing the gates "kills all the demons" (per Crowley, last week).
I watched the sneak preview for the ep, and went, "Oh. Well, all right then," because it harks back to a previous episode (a ways back) in a way that makes sense. I still have quibbles, but they're not huge ones.
As for the "innocent soul" thing, I guess it would be somebody that got roped in by the demons for some reason? Like...a hostage or something? All the people we've seen go there, made a deal of some kind, or were evil. But maybe there's somebody who got stuck in the fallout at some point - say, if somebody like Kevin had been standing close to some hellish event and got sucked in?
I've been watching the preview clips recently, and so I just watched this one.
I totally hope the coyote's (?) name is Charon. Because that's who I thought he was at first, you know, giving passage to the underworld.
And one of my favorite characters played by another thespic infatuation, Michael Hurst, was Charon as a New York cabbie on Hercules.
I am intrigued. And I've figured out a way that they can do the dungeon thing and still have Dean's experience (and Sam's in the Cage) be so un-showably horrific--if that's the waiting room for the torture chamber, so to speak.
Anyway, Charon. I would be tickled.
But . . . since it's a reaper rather than the Ferryman, probably not. Oh, well.
I quite liked this episode, as well. A good case fic, heaping on the angst, and it was fun seeing someone attempt yet another model for hunting. Made me think about that fic I once toyed with, where retired hunters set up a compound for rest-and-recovery--including psychological treatment for possession victims, etc.
I could see Krissy or one of the other kids starting that place.

Or something.
At any rate, to your point, yes.
