After nearly seven (seven? Really?) years on LJ, I'm seriously considering checking out DreamWidth for future blogging purposes. There's a rumor going around that LJ will within the next year be discontinuing paid accounts. I don't know what that means, or how the heck they plan on making money if your only options are free or permanent, but ( Read more... )

It's really easy to transfer one's LJ archive to Dreamwidth!
Once one gets a Dreamwidth account, you go to the "Import Content" link, tell it you want to import from LJ, give it your username and password, and click on the "continue" button. It will then ask you what you want to import, which in your case will be everything (this includes icons and keywords, which saves a lot of effort!).
Then it asks you if you're really sure (because the import can't be stopped once it's started) and you say you are.

The time taken for the import will vary depending on how much there is to import, and also on how many other people are trying to import things at the same time. I expect the load will be heavy if a lot of people are migrating from LJ.

It's sad to hear but i think LJ days are numbered with their *brilliant* idea of making friends page look like tumblr.
I've got DW account but don't use it cause i can't figure out how to use it. I think it people aren't on fb or tumblr anymore they'll lose each other. And i for one don't plan on having fb or tumblr.
It looks like people are forced away from LJ :/

I have FB, but it's more for keeping up with family and my RL peeps (former work associates, classmates, etc.). My fandom life does not exist on FB.

I don't have a tumblr. I have no intention of getting a tumblr. From what I've seen, tumblr is good for reposting pics and rumors, but that's about it.

I've been here at LJ a long time. I don't want to leave. But if there's no advantage to it, then why stay, right?

I don't want to lose all the wonderful fic that's at LJ, but in some ways, I fear it's only a matter of time. A lot of the good authors aren't writing anymore, and some of the stories I've bookmarked or memoried over the years have disappeared. It's sad. :-(

I don't read fics anynmore and the only reason i'm still here is cause of people i've met. But if everyone is leaving i'm afraid we all will lost track of each other. I don't know what to do but if they'll keep changing things like that i won't be able to stay :/

Don't sniffle just yet. It's possible to crosspost between LJ and DW, which is most likely what I'd do if just let my LJ lapse into unpaid status. So I'd still be here.

The current conspiracy theory is that LJ is trying to be like the cool kids on the block--tumler, twitter, FB. Problem being? I don't use any of those. Of those, I use FB the most, but my fannish life is not there. I have a twitter, but I never use it. I have zero interest in tumblr, as it appears to be a site used exclusively for reposting graphics (until the point of origin of the graphic is completely lost) and rumors (again, with no way of tracing the rumor back to its source).

Thus far none of their changes have caused me undue angst. But if they're going to eliminate the manner in which I interact, particularly with fandom, that's . . . problematic.

Meh.

Getting rid of paid accounts and relying on advertising income only would be stupid and idiotic and prove to LJ's paying users that LJ sells eyeballs to ad companies rather than a platform to users.

...that rumor sounds more convincing now that I've typed that.

I believe LJArchive is a program that backs up your LJ to your hard drive, but I recommend importing to Dreamwidth as kerravonsen has explained.

It's a HUGE situation for me, because my journal is far too large to transport to DW. I tried it last year, and there was no way it was going to work.

I guess, given that the admin people there are so helpful, I could contact them and ask if there's a way to transport it in chunks, or something?
