I think very often that life has a way of giving us what we *need*, rather than what we *want*. So yes, maybe this was a bit of a nudge on the shoulder, letting you know that you should be a bit more ready, have a few more of your ducks in a row?
A bit of a dress rehearsal, too, for the anticipation, excitement, wonder...and disappointment, fear, depression and exhaustion to come, once the little person who is meant to be with you, arrives in your lives.
Your child is out there, Felicia. I'm sure of that. On a much smaller scale...6 years ago, after one of my birds passed away, I had the feeling that I was meant to adopt a new little bird whose name was Jimmie. I went to several pet shops, looking at all the lovebirds and wondering, "Are you Jimmie?" but the answer was always "No." Then, finally, the gal who owns the shop nearest my house put into my hands a little 4-week-old girl wrapped in a washcloth. She peered out at me and I knew immediately that she was Jimmie.
