I like your Dean's-eye view of John. That's sort of where I rest my thoughts, as well. (Although I would add that, despite the flaws we could see in S1, JDM's portrayal of John was deeply loving and heroic, and thus I am also a John-girl. *g*)
This is why I am neither a John-girl nor an anti-John-girl, though I tend to be sympathetic toward the character. It's evident that John loved his boys deeply. It is also evident that he was so tunnel-visioned (and/or cryptic) when it came to his quest that he missed what his distance (whether emotional or geographic) was doing to his boys (Dean in particular).
That, imo, is part of the tragedy of John Winchester.
It is also why seeing Dean work through his own feelings toward his father, while difficult and raw and uncomfortable, also makes sense. :-)
