Verse help?

Nov 27, 2007 16:35

Hey, gang. I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I could swear--I mean, I'm 99% sure--there's a passage in the NT wherein Paul (at least, I think it's Paul. It sounds like something Paul would say) says something to the effect that he would rather trade his own salvation than see his flock stray. Or something like that. ( Read more... )

OMG I totally know what verse you're referencing but I can't think of where it is. *runs away to hunt for it on BibleGateway.com*

(try Romans? Cause I think he's talking about the Jews?)

As scionofgrace says, you rock! That's exactly it.

And how did you know to use an SPN icon for that reply? Hm????

Hey, give me a little credit. :-) With all this talk about Dean and his lost, beautiful soul? Gee. I wonder why I would use this icon.

I am curious what thought process (exactly) led to your search for this verse.

Ha! Romans 9:1-4. (At least I assume this is what you're looking for.)

"1I speak the truth in Christ-I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit- 2I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, 4the people of Israel."

Yeah, that's it.

You know, I have this nifty Bible software (Accordance, which I really should learn how to use) and I have 2 Bibles with chain references and concordances, and how did I find it?

A Google search. *facepalm*

See, this is all anti-climatic now and everything. I was going to say, in regards to our faith-based discussions of SPN, that Dean is actually being rather Paul-like in his sacrificing his soul to save Sammy. Who knows? That might work its way into a fic. *cough*yeahright*cough*

You know, I'm in a really weepy mood today. I'm sitting here, looking at your icon of Dean, reading this verse (and thinking what an excellent "modern day Paul" Jensen could play), and pondering the sheer passion Paul felt for Christ and for the salvation of everyone he came into contact with, and I'm just awed by it.

Pardon me while I go grab a tissue.

I know what you're talking about, he's referring to the Jews. Can't for the life of me remember the passage... is it in Romans?

::digs out concordance::

Can't find it either. Grrr.

I figured out why I couldn't find it: the words I was using, and how I interpret it in my brain, do not appear in the actual text:

salvation
assure
If I could
I would

That kind of thing.

My intial word search was with "I could wish," which is totally in the NIV translation where I was searching, but didn't turn up anything! I had to read through the middle of the entire book of Romans to find it. LOL
