A tad belated, but I've been trawling LJ to fuel my current passion for North and South - book and series - and found your wonderful, expert review! Thank you - yes, I agree completely. The screen adaptation does differ from the novel, but only for the best (apart from Thornton's introduction, which was unnecessary - I understand why he was shown in that way, but maybe showing Margaret to make a few more mistakes would have been a better way of balancing the characters). The dialogue is more direct and perhaps 'modern', but fitting and absolutely wonderful (although I do miss some of Gaskell's lines, particularly Thornton's 'You do well!' speech to the strikers, after Margaret is knocked unconscious

Woow! Two days ago i had found the Mobile Phone TV... o-oo I'm so glad that I decided to advise you too l:)

I consider myself a bit of a road warrior. I am on and off jets and through airports at least twice,
usually 4 times a week. I can catch up on news, watch a Discovery program, check up on the stock market or just find something interesting.
