You live in the USA where the official, legal language is English.

Learn it, live it, love it.

Spanish is for poor people.

You know my parents live in downstate IL (Peoria) and seriously every time I come back here, I see so many cars with that bumper sticker (speak English or something similar). So disgusting.

Yeah, my mother is one of those people. When she decided to go back to school to be a teacher she choose to teach math because she says math is a universal language and she won't have to 'deal' with 'those kids' as much.

It's one thing to think that adults should be required to learn English to live here (which I don't agree with) but it's an entirely different thing to want to *teach children* and be *angry* at them for not speaking English well. You're a TEACHER. They are CHILDREN!

I'm done yelling now.

Where did this conversation get started? One of the worst feelings I had was when I had to do my first observation at a school in Chicago. There was a new student, from Mexico, and the teacher did NOTHING to incorporate him. Math class, too, interestingly enough. Kid was quiet and polite and I felt SO BAD.
