DNS Settings in Fedora

Hi Folks. I'm attempting to do something that should be wonderfully simple in Fedora 12. I'm trying to specify DNS servers. I'm trying to do this via the Network Manager and that is not working. I'm trying to hand edit /etc/resolv.conf and that is not working ( Read more... )

Are you using NetworkManager or the network service? They are different services, and can cause problems if you try running both.

Do you have DNS servers setup in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifc-* When your resolv.conf 'go[es] back' does it have a message in there about being re-written by NetworkManager?

Ah! I think I'm partially there because of your response, thanks.

I do think I'm using both the Network Manager and the network service. I think. I never viewed them as separate, I always thought of the network manager as a GUI to the network ( ... )

Ah! Now I seem to have gotten it. In the Network Control Panel I unchecked "Use NetworkManager." Now nslookup indicates I'm using the new DNS servers.

Thanks!!!

NetworkManager is its own stack, entirely separate from the 'network' service, and on Fedora systems (From about F9 on), has been a replacement for 'network'. It's useful for mobile systems, anything having a GUI and that moves between networks (Laptop, netbook, tablet, MID, etc) but for a server, especially one without the need of DHCP, I still use 'network' just because it's light weight and I know it backward and forward.

NetworkManager has its own configuration, which isn't the same as the ifc-* scripts (Though it can use those), but if this machine isn't going to go traveling to different networks, NetowrkManager is probably overkill.

You may want to uninstall NetworkManager or at least make sure it's NOT set to start on boot and that 'network' IS set to start on boot, or you may be kicked out next time the box restarts.

Thanks for the information. I think that you should wash your face at least 3 to 4 times a day. You’ll be surprised how much better your face will look.
