Well, I'm sort of back online, with advice from various people and websites. Still not right, though. Couldn't repair damage to XP Home installed on my PC, which didn't come with a disk version in case of problems. Had to install a cracked Windows XP Professional from a disk my mate AT gave me ages ago, and I'm now infested with malware. Also ( Read more... )

Why not just bite the bullet and put Ubuntu on there? If you install it in a partition, you'll be able to see all of your windows files and mp3s. Ubuntu comes with Open Office already installed, so that's your office applications taken care of. A quick google suggests that City of Heroes will also run under Wine (windows emulator) on Ubuntu as well.

I did actually try to download Ubuntu yesterday, but the computer shut itself down halfway through.

Have now ordered the disk - can't hurt to have another option, can it? Thanks for the suggestion.

hugs, stirs, wishes.

Blah, windows xp can be a real bugger. Have you discovered what exact malware you have yet? Is there any chance you can disk wipe? We've had to do it a couple of times.

Alternatively get new hard drive, start over, then daisy chain up and get old data off old hard drive?

it's evil that you don;t get proper disks when you buy new PCs these days.. Vic had that happen to her too.

win32.murlo.ff, and win32.conhook.ah or some such. Spybot SD found them (among many others) but can't clear them. I found one of the malware .dll files, but it won't let me delete or rename it.
Norton wont run from XP professional - its missing drivers.

I never tend to use Norton anyway, will see if I can find what to do with them.

This is a good forum to ask for advice, but they force you to go through a few steps first: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

don't know if that'll help much, but it's the kind of thing I do.

I'm in exactly the same boat, suffering crashes on a fairly regular basis.

I now have a copy of XP home I can install (and did) but none of my applications work with home as they all have XP professional drivers so I have to use the buggy old crap version.

When I get the time I'll back up everything I need and do a wipe and re-install. Either that or I'll have to pay for a copy of XP professional (becuase I don't have a licence. Mumble.

My stuff is perhaps set up for XP Home drivers. Might be why I'm getting no joy with Professional.
I managed to replace the system32\config\system file from the backup version in \repair, but it's now missing (tries to remember exact name) system32\drivers.pci.sys. Don't know how many other files are AWOL. When I installed Professional, it did a disk check and found bad files - I suspect that might be where the damage was to XP Home.

As far as I can tell XP Home drivers and XP professional drivers are not compatible like you say, hence when I re-installed a copy of XP Home (which I do have a licence for) none of the programs worked.

Tbh, as long as I can back up my photos, documents and the data from my trainer I don't mind reinstalling. I'll lose some of the downloads I have paid to install as I can't see any way of backing them up (paid for a Zone Alarm licence and a System Mechanic). But that's the least on my worries.

I've backed up my documents and iTunes store downloads to an external disk so far. All other iTunes tracks are copied from CDs, so I can recopy them (for the third time, after losing them on laptop) if necessary.

Oh by the way, the technical term for your current PC condition is "Pornalysed".
