Having a look at the Index to theses, I found the following ( reason to despair of academia )

ROFL! Presumably this great work has been completed by now. I wonder what great hitherto unknown insights it offered? Meanwhile I couldn't help thinking of pantomime:

Churchill to Stalin: Look out behind you! Hitler's going to invade Russia!
Stalin: Oh no he isn't!
Audience: Oh yes he is!
etc...

I'm hoping that the US isn't building up to World War III as an encore ...

Maybe they didn't want to do a PhD in Theatre b*llocks. Maybe they wanted to study war and twisted the PhD in such a way that allowed them to waffle to their heart's content on the subject.

Chances are the theatre prof types would have been utterly clueless on the topic and therefore enables an easy pass?

That's why I once answered an exam question on 'Female Cross-dressing in 17th century Europe'. I suspected not too many people would know anything about this one, making my attempt relatively fresh.

Plus you'd get to write about Julie La Maupin. You did write about her, I take it?

I think so, really can't remember what I wrote but there were a few famous examples.

Two of the main reasons for the phenomenon were personal security (often when travelling) and patriotism. There were many reported instances of woman joining the citizen armies of various republics, particularly the Dutch if I remember correctly. They joined either to be with a lover or to fight on their own account
