The Joy Of Work

Consultants charge by the hour. This is why I am reading a drivel of a feasibility study that is 44 pages where really it could be half the length. Why in the infinite wisdom of a senior someone a couple of years back and long gone (thus I cannot publicly abuse them) did we pay money to have some expensive consultants regurgitate our own data? Not all of us consultants are bastards. And my place typically charges by the day (okay, so we do occasionally sell "half days", but at nearly the full daily rate), unless a particular package is sold.

My boss and I are more intelligent than that... we are going to write our own version of this feasibility study ourselves. We will demonstrate Value For Money principles

So you plan on demonstrating Value For Money principles by spending your time writing your own version of a document that already exists? ;p

the board will reject the conclusions as incompatible with their aims before changing their minds several months later when they realise that they were talking out of their arses again

Several months? I'm not sure they react that quickly. It seems my old place still haven't done anything since their terrible decision nearly 2 years ago. Give it another year or two and enough bad things will happen that they might get increased funding and be willing to try and correct their mistake.

I will have to do a load of scrambling ( ... )

They dont have years. We make this clear to them on a frequent basis. What does waste time is people chaning their minds so often.

Hey if VfM is demonstrated, it doesn't matter where it comes from! ;)

I certainly haven't ruled out the option of going somewhere else that pay better. I just don't feel the need to do it yet. Ask me again in a year's time though!
