[Okay, this is the second nightmare he's gotten from his other best friend, and he has to say that it discomforts him more to think of Krile alone after a nightmare like this than it discomforts him thinking of Cloud alone. It wasn't as scary as the other one, but it certainly preys on everyone's fears in this place. It also confirms that Krile isn't as happy as she seems sometimes.

He sits up and wonders if he should say anything to her. No, he thinks. These things are better left private. Not wanting to go back to sleep only to slip in another's dream, he lights a candle and burns the midnight oil with his tome of adventure stories.

The people in his stories hold a light to the darkness, he figures. The image of Krile holding a match in the darkness comes to him, and he decides that Krile does too.]

[For a while, Above resists torpor and tries to think about this dream.

It was sad. She knew already, that Krile wasn't as carefree as she seemed.

But still.]

[Vimes is aware that this counts as a very bad nightmare. He's also aware that it's Krile, and he feels nothing but compassion to her deep seated issues of being left behind and sorrow that it has gotten to this point.

Nevertheless, he has to pass a hand over his face and laughs for one reason, and one reason alone.

The villain said Mwa ha ha ha. Verbatim. It's a hysterical thing to think of one so foul laughing in such a manner. If it was only so easy as a wicked laugh, he thinks. Perhaps Krile still thinks in black and white, but that's all right. She'll learn one day. They all do.]

[It is strange to think that someone as cheerful, stolid and stubbornly hopeful as Krile could dream so darkly. But there are few defenses against the terrors of the slumbering mind. Hawk gets up and wanders, barefoot, to the porch for a moment, hoping the night air will clear his head enough for sleep to find him again.

And hoping, too, that this will not last much longer. They all at least deserve their rest.]

[Cloud wakes with a start, his breathing loud in the silent room.

The idea of someone taking people away... it's one that's occurred to him more than once, and it's apparently a fear that plagues Krile, too. He doesn't know what an 'Exdeath' might be, but maybe that's someone from Krile's past. Or from before he arrived; she's been here a lot longer than he has.

It takes him a long time to fall asleep again, his thoughts snarled and threaded through with exhaustion and a kind of dull, nagging fear.]
