Diana Wynne Jones

I am really very sad to learn from Mr. Gaiman, among others, about the death of Diana Wynne Jones. She was one of my absolute favourite authors when I was a child and I passionately recommend her books all the time at work. I was sad when I heard about it too, though I only really liked the Chrestomanci novels... Witch Week was one of the very first YA novels I ever owned, & I still remember the exact wording of many parts of it! I can't really feel that sad about her death, though--it sounds like her life deserves to be rejoiced over far more than to be cried over. It does keep tugging at my heart for some odd reason, but the feeling's more bittersweet than anything else, & even a little bit glad.

I always feel sad when a writer I love dies because of that nagging "one more book!" feeling--which is totally selfish, and particularly so in a case like this, where Jones had apparently been quite ill for some time. Still, there it is.

My favourite was Dogsbody, where the star Sirius is exiled to the body of a dog on earth after he is framed fo a crime. The way the animals interact with each other is just perfect! After I read it I spent ages fiercely pretending that my own dog was a celestial body in canine form, an extended fantasy that actually worked pretty well since he remains the most remarkable dog I've ever known.
