At some point this summer I fell out of the habit of writing down snippets from books. I hadn't even realized it, it was just something that slipped away. Only tonight, searching through two different notebooks for a perfect turn of phrase that I only vaguely remember and thought for sure I must have recorded, did I discover this. I find nearly every other page of Mrs. Dalloway quotable, although half of the quotes I adore I still can't decipher. Sometimes I like Virginia Woolf just because what she says is so entirely original, even to this day, that I'm astounded.

Not understanding Virginia doesn't even matter to me because every sentence of hers is simply so excruciatingly beautiful. I read both Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse outloud to myself this summer and so was constantly aware of how sonically perfect, how terribly gorgeous her sentences and paragraphs are. Eminently quotable, indeed. My favourite parts are (maybe; I can never decide) the ones about Septimus Warren Smith. Like this ( ... )

That's a great passage. I wish I had brought my copy of it along but I figured since I could get it at any library I'd save the room in my suitcase. That's a very interesting tidbit about V.W. and the birds singing Greek. I really want to read more about her personal life - delve into it more than I did in school ( ... )
