Pam Plays Doubles: Jean MacGibbon Constable 1962

I bought this years ago for 10p in a charity shop. I only remembered the story vaguely and picked it up for a reread because of the tennis theme. It's not a great book, although I liked the detail on the tennis and it was a quick read!

I have this. I remember reading it as a teenager in the eighties and rather liking it whilst at the same time finding it a bit disappointing as it wasn't quite as good as the other schoolgirl stories I devoured. I think both the liking and the disappointment came from the love interest angle.

The love interest angle isn't one thing or another - it doesn't turn the book into a romance, and it isn't clearly resolved, so you almost wonder why it's there. We start the story with Pam and her schoolfriends and their conflicts, but they're a little sidelined at the end and you're left asking 'for what?'

Thank you for such an interesting post. I'd like to read this book. Your copy was a wonderful bargain but the book is available more cheaply than from the tennis site.

It's definitely worth a read if you like tennis.

I know I borrowed this from the classroom library when I was about 10, but can't remember anything about it.

I couldn't remember much beyond Pam playing (and winning) doubles with an older boy, and I had positive enough associations to choose to reread it.
