The latest Mummy movie appears to be quite a parody of the Indiana Jones movies. I mean seriously, the father-son moments, the non-stop action, the booby traps, the ancient artifacts, the bizarre creatures or supernatural elements, the clash of ethnic cultures, and a snug bit of comical relief every now and then...if that isn't the recipe for a typical Indiana Jones movie...especially the recent Crystal Skull movie, then I don't know what is.
Perhaps I should start with the synopsis of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn O'Connell (Maria Bello) are "retired" from their adventurous Mummy-related lifestyles and very much bored with it. Well, what a coincidence! They happen to have a son, Alex (Luke Ford) who has a knack for Asian archeology and digging up old things...like the Dragon Emperor (Jet Li)! So you can see where this is going. Soon enough, the family gets together and father and son have to reconcile their seperation throughout this non-stop action-packed adventure to stop an ancient force like no other.
I really liked how the Emperor had control over the elements. This is mostly due to my obsession over Avatar the Last Airbender, but placing that bias aside, Jet Li does a very great job with the fighting as usual. If anything, the martial arts of it was the only realistic appealing part of the movie. They really tried, but you can tell right from the start that this film didn't have a big budget. The special effects aren't as amazing as they were in the previous Mummy movies. But if you look past all that and use your imagination, then sure, it looks awesome! But then, why are you even in the theater in the first place? Grab a book and put your imaginative talents to the test at home without wasting your money.
I do appreciate the humor in this movie, however. Brendan Fraser does a great job acting like more brains than brute version of Dr. Jones with his guns in place of the whip. And he is still as funny as he was in the George of the Jungle movie....what else was he in? I don't remember. Oh and I dont' like Maria Bello replacing Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. Rachel was not only a better actress, but much hotter too! Oh, the disappointment.
Dialogue and acting were very sloppy in this movie. If it weren't for the action scenes (and that's not saying much), I don't know why anyone would want to watch this movie on the big screen. Seriously, the acting was so bad it was reminicent of hearing Anikin Skywalker and Padme converse in Star Wars Episode II and III. Gahhh!
If there's one thing I absolutely loved about this movie, it was THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN creatures! I loved the THE YETI! They were very well imaged. Even their facial features were more effective than the acting of the real people in the movie. And watching them suddenly show up for the battle was so amusing to watch! I would very well like to have a pet Yeti someday.
I give The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor a 3.5 out of 10
