it depends on how you look at it. the solo in pantera's 'the sleep' is awesome, but only with the supporting song around it, you can't cut it out.

Any part of a song should be an integral part of the whole, lacking something without the rest. This is a truism. I would suggest watching this talk: http://www.worldsciencefestival.com/video/notes-neurons-full

Yup. He is definitely one of my favorite guitarists. I was thinking more along the lines of rock for this though. Trying to seed a new pandora station. :)

hrrrm. Well my rock tastes tend to cast a broad net. Maybe some satriani although he's kinda tame....there's Yngwie Malmsteen but he's kinda cheezy.
Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Vai, and Tony Iommi.

There's Alex Lifeson if you like rush (I personally would rather drag myself over broken glass than listen to most rush but he's a great guitarist.) Joe perry of course, Adam Jones if you want something more heavy.

And of course there's always Buck Dharma, Dave Mustaine, Syd Barrett, and Mike Campbell.

All great guitarists.

Very difficult question... However, the top 4 are all the same person for me ;)

Money - Pink Floyd
Time - Pink Floyd
Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) - Pink Floyd
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd (the 2nd/Outro solo)

I'm just a sucker for David Gilmore's psychedelic spacey solos :)

I have very similar tastes. My favorite of his is actually Shine On You Crazy Diamond... the whole thing. Just love the amazing amount of sorrow and joy packed into that song.

Defiantly! I was trying to keep my list from getting too long. For extended solos that make up most of the song I would also put Echoes up there.

The first thing that comes to mind is the last minute or so of Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits.
