A day in Melbourne. Suggestions?

Dec 13, 2008 13:22

I've got a free day in Melb on Tuesday, 16th.

Suggestions on stuff to do?
I love museums (especially contemporary art), gardens & parks, interesting neighborhoods, markets, street food.
Any not-to-be-missed exhibitions?

Inner city Bangalore's been all-noise, crazed traffic and broken sidewalks. So I could use a bit of serenity and grace.

The weather is a bit unpredictable here at the moment, and we've had a LOT of rain this weekend. So, some suggestions for

On Tuesday the Queen Victoria market is open. Not sure what the vibe will be on a weekday though.

Coffee and/or lunch on Brunswick Street or Smith Street in Fitzroy and watch more interesting types walk on by.

Also recommend a breakfast/lunch place called Gordons which is in a small alley-way opposite Myer on Bourke Street - fabulous place.

Melbourne Museum is good for a look for around an hour or so, that's also close to the city.

You might also want to wander around Southbank and maybe catch a ferry over to Williamstown - good for ice creams.

There's a very good information booth on Bourke Street opposite Myer, if you run out of ideas, they will help you enormously.

Enjoy :)

I'll second the Queen Victoria market. I've been on a weekday and it was a bit less overwhelming, but still very nice.

The Immigration Museum (towards the Spencer St end) is having a major exhibition. There's also the National gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Rd - basically just over the river and past the Arts Centre (just keep walking past Flinders St Station and over the bridge)

There's also just being able to wander the laneways and alleyways between Flinders St and Bourke St from Swanston St over to About King I think it is... lots of quirky shops and interesting stuffs.

leathersub's recommendation is one to take up though if you get stuck about the info booth. There is also a massive one opposite Flinders St station in Fed Square - it looks like a square glass building with no one in it, but go down the stairs and there's lots of helpful people.

And pack warm clothes! It's wet, cold and raining, although don't be surprised if you score a hot summers day!
