I think that's a great analogy (and very wise of your dad's cousin to recognize the risk and get out). I 100% support starting out looking at places a lot closer, paying a lot more, or with very cool product. It's tough because, of course, it's not like they're laying out their plans with 'and in 3 months we'll be in such dire financial straits that we'll be shutting the company down'. There is definitely some comfort in having a job right now, but yes, maybe it's time to see if there's wiggle room in your application considerations. I'd probably group potential jobs into tiers, and, assuming right now you're only applying to your top tier options, take a look at those second tier options and determine if they're 'close enough
