This is a heartbreaking betrayal and I'm so sorry. You were a resourceful kid, and I'm glad that one banker could see it. I wonder if she would remember you; I wouldn't be surprised if you stuck in her mind as well.
Re trust in banks, I guess it depends on what you mean by trust. I guess I trust the FDIC to protect the amount they say they're going to protect, but of course I don't trust a bank or any other corporation to care about me. There was just a survey out about how CEOs overestimate their own employees' perception of how much their own companies care about their wellbeing. And I'm like, who in the world could possibly believe their company cares about them?? I work for a great organization I believe in, but I 100% know that as soon as it's not in the organization's best interest to keep me, I'm gone. There's zero trust - just a mutually beneficial arrangement for as long as it's mutually beneficial. Banks are no different, they're there to use your money, and use it they will. As long as you're also getting a benefit from it

sorry your mom did that to you. i remember a friend getting into a huge argument with her husband when he raided their son's savings account to pay bills rather than waiting until the next pay period. he didnt see any problem with what he'd done, so she took her son to a different bank and got him a new savings account his father couldnt access.
