That is a question often asked when I tell the stories about Ed. The answer is more elusive. The short version is “he thought it was funny”. But, that’s not a answer that really explains much. He had grown up with parents who had a lot of money, and he was used to being able to do what he wanted. When he came to school they weren’t there to hold him back. So, the “do what I want” was still there without any control over it. He drank, did drugs, caused trouble, and got kicked out of engineering school often. But, his parents would pay more money and back he’d come. Up to a point. After a couple of years the school told them it wasn’t worth it and he stayed in New York.
