Halfway point

Best Books of 2010…so far

Oh, the dog days of summer. It hardly feels like more than half the year has passed us by, but it’s true: there are 152 days left till a new year is upon us again. To mark this more-than-halfway point, and also because I was lazily daydreaming while at the beach today, I present to you the books I’ve enjoyed the most…so far.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society - Makes you wish for the bygone days of letter writing.

My Life in France - Julia Child’s passion for food is infectious. When I go to France, I’ll make sure to order sole muniere.

Indiscretion - There are so many imitation Regency novels out there that whenever I read the words “like Jane Austen” in a review, I’m liable to raise an eyebrow cynically - but Jude Morgan’s books actually deserve such an accolade.

The Likeness - Though In the Woods introduced me to Tana French’s brand of nail-biting, character-driven thrillers, it was The Likeness where I found a character to root for wholeheartedly.

Ship Breaker - Dystopian fiction at its finest, and eerily timely.

Little Bee - Tackles weighty themes (immigration, belonging, language) yet never loses focus of its vibrant, complicated characters.

Faithful Place - A mystery novel that transcends genre fiction boundaries, and also brings Dublin to vivid life.

One Day - Em and Dex, Dex and Em-these two will make an indelible impression on you as they have on each other.

Forthcoming: a list of upcoming books I’m looking forward to!
