A lot of it comes down to Middle Class Smugness and "New Age" (rhymes with sewerage") Anti-intellectualism. It is why books on the Ancient Celtic Potato Goddess sold like anachronistic hotcakes.

The same _some moron said_ or _I feel_ over actual research that drives the Anti-Vax movement and the idiots wanting commercial raw milk. Pasteur was hailed as a lifesaver because people died like flies from dodgy milk. Drinking your own cow's fresh milk might make your family sick, drinking unpasteurised milk that has been floating around a few days, a mixture of milking from dozens of cows, may well kill you.
