Summary: “Wave to daddy,” John said and waved Nathan’s arm for him.

John had completely freaked out the first time he went to pick up Nathan only to find him… not there! It was only after his teacher had called the director into the room and she had told him calmly that Mr. Sheppard picked Nathan up early, that John collected himself and left.
He flipped his cell open when it rang in the car.
“Oh good,” Rodney’s frantic voice came through the phone, “I was hoping to get you before you went to get Nathan. I already picked him up.”
“Yes Rodney, I’m aware of that. It’s lucky for you and every person in that daycare that I’m not allowed to bring my gun home.”
“You wouldn’t have…”
“Oh yes Rodney, I would have. I do have a cell phone as you well know, and I check for messages from you every time I come back to earth. A message saying something to the effect of ‘I picked Nathan up early so don’t worry about it’ would have been nice.”
“Well I’ll remember that next time.”
“Make sure you do.” He hung up.
John was already sorry for his tone and the fact that he’d hung up on Rodney not even a minute after it happened, but he resisted the urge to call him back and apologize. Instead, he stopped at the grocery store and bought a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates and a few other ‘I’m sorry for the way I acted’ things.
Rodney was dishing baby food into a bowl when John came through the door.
“Welcome home dear,” Rodney snapped and carried the bowl into the dining room where Nathan was waiting not so patiently in the high chair.
John felt the sting of the bite as he put things away. He went into the dining room and smiled when Nathan started waving his arms at him like a madman.
“Hey buddy,” John said and kissed the top of his head. He sat beside Rodney and handed him the chocolates.
“This supposed to make it all better?” Rodney asked.
“It’s a start,” John replied.
“I did call you.”
“Late.”
“I’m sorry about that.”
“See it from my point of view Rodney. I’m off world all day, I’m constantly thinking about you and Nathan and all I want to do when I get home is pick him up and spend time with my family. It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me when I went to get him and they said he wasn’t there. Of course it could have been worded better… ‘Rodney already picked him up’ would have forestalled the freak out.”
“The scariest thing?” Rodney asked.
“Yes.”
“Even scarier than when Todd was sucking your life out for Kolya’s pleasure?”
“Yes.”
“Scarier than when you thought Kolya had cut off your hand?”
“Yes.”
“Scarier than-”
“Rodney, *the* scariest thing ever. I’d rather feed myself to a wraith over and over again than lose either of you.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t call you.”
“I’m sorry I hung up on you.”
Rodney leaned over and John put his hand on the back of his neck and kissed him. Nathan chose that moment to vocalize that he was rather upset that the feeding had stopped.
“The master beckons,” John said and waggled his eyebrows.
Rodney fed Nathan another bite of mixed vegetables, his favorite of the week, and looked at John.
“You said the chocolates were a start. Where does it go from there?”
“Well I have wine, and a few other things stashed away in the fridge.”
“What about Nathan?”
“He sleeps through the night now, that gives us… roughly between three and five hours, depending on how tired we want to be at work tomorrow.”
“Oh I can function quite well on very little sleep.”
Nathan had apparently slept most of the day at daycare, something they were assured wouldn’t happen, and when nine o’clock rolled around he was still wide awake. Neither John nor Rodney really had a problem with that, aside from the fact that they were risking his schedule getting mixed up, they’d gone through that the first month of his life and weren’t eager to do it again anytime soon.
But their quality time as a family had been cut down to nights and weekends and both parents were happy to squeeze a little extra time where they could, which, Rodney had explained, was why he had been picked up early from daycare.
John was sitting on the floor with Nathan, the erecta-roomba making its rounds as usual, while Rodney circled them with the video camera.
“Wave to daddy,” John said and waved Nathan’s arm for him.
Nathan continued flapping his arm when John had let it go. He was looking at the camera and smiling.
John put Nathan’s butt on the floor and sat him up, supporting him with a hand around each little arm. Nathan’s feet were kicking in and out as he watched Rodney circle with the camera.
“Rodney look,” John whispered.
Nathan was sitting unsupported, his eyes were wide as if he knew he could fall over and smash the side of his face on the floor at any moment. The newness of the situation wore off rather quickly though. Nathan squealed, flapped his arms and lost his balance. John caught him and picked him up.
“Good job Nath!” he exclaimed. “This calls for a victory celebration.” He handed Nathan to Rodney, went into the kitchen and came back a moment later with bottle.
“Come on big guy,” John said as he led Rodney up the steps, “time to go to bed.”
He went into the nursery, took Nathan and began changing his diaper.
“Your idea of a victory celebration is going to bed?”
“The celebration isn’t for him Rodney.”
“Oh, I see. Well then, while you’re on baby duty I think I’ll grab a quick shower.”
John fed Nathan, burped him and rocked him. They didn’t usually rock at night, they were told that it makes the baby expect it and then he wouldn’t go to sleep on his own, but John figured that since he wasn’t going to sleep on his own anyway, a little night time rocking wouldn’t hurt. He turned on the radio and started the lullaby CD. Rodney had found an awesome CD called ‘The Planet Sleeps’ that had lullabies from all over the world. John’s favorite was track 6, a song from Chile called Hace tuti guagua, it was three minutes and forty four seconds of the most relaxing humming John had ever heard.
Finally, Nathan went to sleep and John laid him in his crib and covered him with a light blanket. He turned off the radio and opened the baby book.
~September 25, 2011 - 5 months old. Nathan sat up unsupported for twenty five seconds. (J) ~
He closed the book and went into the bedroom. He smiled and shook his head when he found Rodney wearing nothing but boxers, sleeping above the covers.
“Come on buddy,” John said as he pulled the comforter from under Rodney, “time for bed.”
“No but...” Rodney grunted.
“There’s always tomorrow.”
“But it was supposed to be make up sex,” Rodney complained softly.
“Well, call me sometime tomorrow and I’ll hang up on you again.”
“I think it should be my turn to hang up on you.”
John could tell that Rodney was already more asleep than awake. “Okay,” he said, “if that’s what you want.”
He stripped to his boxers, got under the covers, curled up against Rodney’s back and turned off the light.
“Night Rodney,” he said and lightly kissed Rodney’s ear.
“Night John,” Rodney replied automatically, he was already dead to the world.
~*~
John had the camera on and was filming Nathan doing his army crawl toward him.
“See Rodney, that’s why he had to dress as a soldier,” John said.
“Yeah well, every baby needs to dress as a soldier then. I wanted him to be something that would display his genius.”
“Rodney, he displays his genius every day, he never gets to show off his military back ground.” He looked down when Nathan finally reached him and grabbed the bottom of his jeans. He handed the camera to Rodney and picked up his son.
“That’s daddy’s little man,” he said and wiped a line of slobber off Nathan’s chin. “Look son, your commanding officers aren’t going to take lightly the fact that you’re soaking your uniform.” He rubbed at the wet spot at the neck of Nathan’s camouflage Halloween costume. “Ready?” he asked Rodney.
“You know, he’s only six months old, he can’t eat candy,” Rodney stated.
“No, but we can,” John widened his eyes and lifted his eye brows. “Look at this neighborhood Rodney, these people are bound to give the good stuff.”
“You mean like full size Hershey bars?”
“Never know.”
“Alright, I’ll get his jacket.”
They spent an hour walking from door to door and hearing how cute Nathan was. Rodney learned that little kids, especially little girls, loved babies. Nathan completely ate up all the attention, squealing and waving his arms. He grabbed at every finger that came his way and either Rodney or John had quickly snatched away the candy that the kids decided he wanted.
By the time they got home, Nathan was out like a light. John gently removed his costume, changed his diaper and put on his pajamas.
“His hair didn’t fit the military uniform,” Rodney said.
“Neither does mine,” John replied.
“True, but at least yours is short. Nathan’s hair is almost touching his shoulders.”
“Can’t cut it Rodney.”
“Why?”
“Because, you’re not supposed to cut a baby’s hair until they’re a year old.”
“That’s another six months John, he’ll have hair to his knees before then.”
“Then he has hair to his knees, we’re not cutting his hair Rodney.”
“He gets that from you!”
“What?”
“The unnaturally fast hair growth. If you don’t at least trim your hair once a month, it’ll be insane. And don’t even get me started on your beard.”
John kissed Nathan and held him out for Rodney to do the same, and then he put him in the crib and covered him.
“You like my beard,” John said as he and Rodney left the room.
“I never said I didn’t, it just grows way to fast.”
“Well I have healthy hair, I can’t help it.”
They went down stairs and dumped the bag of candy on the table.
“Ooh, Nathan cleaned up,” Rodney said as he grabbed a fun sized Hershey bar.
John smacked his hand. “ah ah, I have to check it first.”
“You’re the one who said we live in a good neighborhood John.”
“We do, but nuts can live in good neighborhoods too.”
“Okay, well check that one first.”
John picked up the little chocolate bar and checked the ends and under the flap. “Here you are dear,” he said and handed the bar to Rodney who made an insanely sexual yummy noise.
~*~
“Hey Sam,” John called from the kitchen when Sam called into the seemingly empty house.
“Where’s my boy?” Sam asked as she leaned on the counter.
“He’s at the park with Nathan.”
“Actually John, Nathan was the boy I was talking about.”
John chuckled and stirred the sauce, “I know Sam.”
“So Rodney took him to the park huh?”
“Yup.”
“That’s almost shocking.”
“Not really. He wanted to spend some time with him and he also says that it’ll be good for Nathan to see all the bigger kids running around.”
“Trying to get him to walk huh?”
“Yup. Crawling isn’t enough apparently.” He turned away from the stove and looked at Sam. “You should see him Sam; he’s all over the house! His knees are a little red and we had to put baby gates all over the place.”
“Yeah, I was thinking about that.”
“What?”
“You have to let me take him for the night.”
“What!?”
“Yeah, just one night.”
“Sam,”
“John, he’s almost seven months old that’s plenty old enough to spend the night with his Auntie Sam. I do have nephews; I know how to take care of babies John.”
“I’m not saying that you don’t, it’s just-”
“Time to loosen the reigns a little John, just for a night.”
“What brought this on?”
“The date.”
“Huh?”
“Don’t you know what today is?”
“Of course I know, I mean it was my wedding, one doesn’t usually forget that after just one year.”
“There you go. You and Rodney deserve a night alone.”
“We enjoy our time with Nathan.”
“I know you do, and you’re both great parents. But John, you can’t tell me that your sex life hasn’t taken a hit from fatherhood.”
“Well…” John said and put a hand on his hip. He turned back to the spaghetti sauce and started stirring again, “maybe a little.”
“We’ve made reservations for you at The Golden Room,” Sam told him.
“Wow, that’s… it’s hard to get seats there.”
“Well we made them a long time ago.”
“We?”
“Yeah me and the guys, Jack, Cam, Daniel, Teal’c even Vala.”
“Well we have to talk to Rodney, I can’t say one way or the other, Nathan has two parents. Speak of the devil,” John said when he heard the garage door closing. A moment later the door to the kitchen opened and Rodney walked in With Nathan in one arm, the diaper bag hanging off the other shoulder and lugging the stroller beside him.
“Hey Sam,” Rodney said as he handed Nathan into her reaching hands.
“Hey Rodney,” Sam returned before making baby noises at Nathan.
“Sam wants Nathan to spend the night with her,” John said as he poured the sauce into a bowl.
“What? No, he’s just a baby.”
“They made reservations for our anniversary at the golden room.”
“Wow.”
“Yeah.” John put the pan in the sink and slipped himself into Rodney’s arms. “We could benefit from a night alone. You, me, some wine. We could get some chocolate-”
“Okay.”
“Really?” Sam asked excitedly.
“We’ll pack his bag and drop him off,” Rodney said.
“Alright,” Sam agreed and reluctantly put Nathan in the jumper that sat in the hallway. Nathan automatically began jumping and squealing. “Your reservations are for seven and I’ll drop Nathan off in the morning at about ten.”
“Okay,” John and Rodney said at the same time. They were still wrapped in each other’s arms.
Sam knelt in front of Nathan. “I think your daddies are about to get personal and that’s my cue to leave,” she whispered. “See you guys tonight.”
“Bye Sam.”
John and Rodney packed extra clothes, toys, books, diapers; the jumper which was Nathan’s all time favorite thing to do, and the play pin, since Nathan had started pulling up on the bars of the baby bed they had stored the bassinette in the spare room. They wrote down both their cell numbers even though Sam knew them both by heart, Ronon’s number in case she needed him to get anything from the house for her and the number to the restaurant.
At six pm they dropped Nathan off, kissed him several times, told Sam that no matter what she thought they were doing to call if she needed them, and then stood outside the door for a few minutes listening for Nathan to cry.
“He’ll be fine guys,” Sam called through the closed door and John and Rodney finally left.
The restaurant was full, but John and Rodney hadn’t expected anything less. They were seated at a table by the window and given a bottle of champaign and some menus. Rodney made sure to tell their server to make sure there was absolutely no lemon on his fish what so ever. John ordered his prime rim medium well.
They ate and talked, mostly about Nathan. About halfway through their meal, John called Sam on Rodney’s insistence and heard Nathan laughing insanely in the back ground. Sam told them that Jack had come over and was playing with Nathan. John told her to tell Jack not to tickle him too much, and wasn’t satisfied until she told him. Then he heard Jack tell her to tell him that he was worrying too much and that Nathan was perfectly alright, then Nathan started laughing again.
“I think having Nathan around kind of reminds Jack of Charlie.” Rodney said after John told him that Jack was playing with Nathan.
“Yeah, I can’t imagine what that must have been like.”
“Horrible. Take what you felt when Nathan wasn’t at the daycare that day, and multiply it by infinity and that may come close.”
“We’re never having guns in the house Rodney. I can take care of any threat that comes our way but I’m not taking the risk that what happened to Charlie will happen to Nathan.”
“Okay. Besides, we’ve got Ronon to protect us too.”
“Yeah, one call that we’re in trouble and he’d be there in a heartbeat.”
“It’s funny how attached he is to Nathan, I never thought of him as the type to like kids.”
“You know he was married on Sateda and he got kind of emotional when he gave us his baby boots. I wonder if his wife was pregnant or if they were planning on having kids.”
“It’s possible.”
“I hope he finds someone and can be happy again.”
“I think he may have.”
“What?”
“I called him the other day and heard a woman’s voice in the back ground. He got off the phone pretty fast too.”
“Well good. Maybe Milky way will be better to him than Pegasus was.”
“We should put the boots up and give them back to him when he needs them.”
“That’s a good idea.”
After dinner, they went to a coffee shop and had a cup of coffee, then they picked up some of Rodney’s favorite chocolate and went home.
They managed to keep their hands to themselves long enough to call Sam. She told them that Nathan was sleeping and that she was going to put the phone on vibrate and not answer it again until morning. Rodney hung up. “He’s sleeping,” he told John.
John slunk across the room and pounced on Rodney, pushing him back onto the couch. He attacked Rodney’s mouth with his own, running his hands over every inch of Rodney’s body that he could reach.
Without breaking the kiss, John reached into the small paper bag and pulled out one of the pieces of chocolate. He unwrapped it one handed and broke the kiss just long enough to put the chocolate in his mouth. He dove back into the kiss and Rodney moaned as he lapped the fast melting chocolate out of John’s mouth.
“Upstairs,” John said deep in his throat after he swallowed what little chocolate Rodney had left in his mouth.
John lay beside Rodney propped on one elbow he was dangling a piece of the chocolate above Rodney’s open mouth. He put the chocolate in and kissed Rodney, taking half of the chocolate into his own mouth.
“Mmm,” John hummed, “that’s good.”
“Mmm,” Rodney agreed with a nod.
John ran his fingers through Rodney’s hair and then cupped his cheek. He turned Rodney’s face toward him and kissed him lightly on the lips.
Rodney turned onto his side and put his hand on John’s naked hip; he pulled him closer and deepened the kiss before pushing John onto his back and rolling on top of him.
John moaned when his erection made contact with Rodney’s and gently rocked his hips up.
“Uh uh,” Rodney said and pushed harder against John making him gasp, “I don’t want you getting off like that.” Rodney smiled and ran his tongue over his lips.
John inhaled through his nose and shuddered knowing what Rodney had in mind.
Rodney gave him another quick kiss before kissing his way down John’s body.
John drew in a long slow breath as Rodney took the head of his dick in his mouth. He closed his eyes and sighed as Rodney enveloped him further.
Before long, John’s was moaning with his back arched and his hands fisted in the sheets. He moaned Rodney’s name as he came.
John was still in the euphoria of one of Rodney’s mind blowing blow jobs when he felt Rodney’s slick fingers pressing at his anus. He turned onto his side giving Rodney better access and pulled him into a deep kiss.
Rodney pulled his fingers out of John and pushed him onto his back. John lifted his hips and Rodney pressed in with a moan.
It’d been a long time since they’d had the house to themselves and just as long since they were able to have sex without worrying that Nathan would wake up halfway through.
John moaned and Rodney grunted as he thrust in and out.
“Oh John,” Rodney moaned and dug his fingers into John’s hips.
John hissed at the pressure and a moment later he felt Rodney’s come filling him.
Rodney pulled out and lay beside John. John unwrapped a piece of the chocolate and held it in his teeth, he leaned in and Rodney bit the chocolate in half and moaned at the taste.
“Happy anniversary Rodney,” John said and kissed him.
“I love you,” Rodney replied.
“Love you too.”
“I wonder how Nathan is.”
“He’s fine Rodney. Let’s just enjoy the night.”
They were quiet for awhile then Rodney spoke just as John was on his was to sleep.
“John,” he said quietly into the darkness.
“Mmm,” John asked sleepily.
“Have you thought about having more kids?”
John turned and faced Rodney. “Nathan’s still a baby,”
“I know, I wasn’t talking about right now, but I think I’d like to have more.”
“We’d have to go about it differently; I don’t think Jeanie would be willing to do that twice.”
“No. But I was thinking about us having a baby, biologically made from the two of us.”
“Are you talking about cloning?” John asked and pulled his head back.
“No.”
“What then. It’s not exactly possible for you and I to have a baby.”
“I work with ancient tech all day John. I cataloged a device the other day that made it possible for a male to get pregnant.”
John sat up. “What?”
“Guess gay marriages were more common back then and they wanted kids.”
John sighed. “You mean you…”
“No, no it wasn’t activated.”
“What are you saying then?”
“That it’s an option we didn’t have before. You and I can have a baby John.”
John swallowed and lay back down. He wasn’t sure what to say or how to react. “You mean, we could have more kids without adopting or having your sister carry them.”
“Yes.”
“This isn’t Pegasus Rodney; a pregnant man would draw a lot of attention.”
“I didn’t say it would be easy, which ever of us decides to carry the baby will have to spend a lot of the pregnancy inside. But we could have more kids; we wouldn’t have to depend on someone else to have our family. You want more kids don’t you?”
“Of course I do, but this is a lot to digest. I need time to get my head around it.”
“Alright look, there are six months until Nathan turns one. If we get pregnant after his birthday he’ll be almost two before the baby is born. I’m not saying we have to do it that soon, but we could.”
“We’d have to get our own doctor to do the prenatal care. Obviously someone with security clearance.”
“We could use Lam, or Carson, I think he was planning on coming home soon. It’s an option John, let’s just think about it.”
“Okay.”
Even though John had been almost asleep when Rodney brought the conversation up, it was almost dawn before he finally fell asleep. He kept imagining himself with a pregnant belly. He knew from the beginning that he wanted more than one child; he just never thought it would be possible to have them himself. He knew if they did it, he would be the one to get pregnant. He had so many questions, and was touched beyond belief that Rodney wanted a bigger family and was willing to do whatever had to be done to get it.
