When people invite me to come visit Florida, I immediately bristle. It’s not because I live on the west coast, which is the best coast by far. It’s not because I’m a snooty Californian, even if I am. It’s not even because of the news articles that we see on a regular basis. It’s because we’re at war, Florida and me

Oh my goodness, that's a long history of things not going right for you in Florida!

I got sick every time I went to the Philippines. Granted, it was only twice, but it made me think I shouldn't go again.

It's a good thing the hurricane took a different turn and you didn't actually have to go through it, or you probably wouldn't say hurricanes are not as terrifying as tornadoes, since hurricanes very often encompass multiple tornadoes, often in close distances. I've lived through a couple, being in an area that didn't often have to evacuate, but on at least a couple occasions, the storm did an about face and turned inland toward the panhandle, and by then it was too late to evacuate. We counted at least 6 tornadoes on our property. We couldn't do anything but hold our breath and hope they all skipped our house. Miraculously, they did, though they sent sections of the one acre fenceposts around our vegetable garden flying at least as far as 10 miles away (we had neighbors who got them back to us - lots of land between folks that far out in the country), and ripped all the branches off just the inside of the trees in our circle drive. Hurricanes are no joke. But, I will definitely give you that Florida can certainly be a bitch!
