Topic: Resolution

The first time it happened, I was young and clueless. I had consumed something that was probably an approximation of beer at a friend’s house over the course of a half hour. It was sweet, fizzy, and tasted like lemon soda. I was doubled over in pain for about twenty minutes, and my friend offered me her couch. Eventually, the pain went away, ( Read more... )

*hugs* Thank you for supporting and advocating for your daughter and your students. So many kids go without support and understanding and suffer greatly, but you are part of the solution!

Personally, I completely agree that you should be able to talk about anything with someone, and get support finding that someone if your close ones cannot or are not equipped to do so. And that you should know pertinent family history, medical and personal, so that you are not left wrong-footed when things blow (as secrets tend to, at the worst moments, as well) or suffering physically when it could be prevented.

God knows the not-talking-about-it is what drives me cr*zy about my parents. My mother's cousin died of cancer a decade ago, and I don't even know what type of cancer she had, because my mother never learned it I think, and chickened out of checking her when things got bad.

Playing devil's advocate: not talking works for some people, or it wouldn't have been such a prevailing mode of thinking for so long.

Health history is soooo important. I remember just having anxiety over a fire drill.

Oh definitely true, those fire drills were scary. We had horrible sirens that would go off. The nuclear bomb drills (by contrast) had little bells that rang. Maybe that's why Gen X is so cynical.

It's so important to talk about these things. My family has a history of IPF and not talking about it led to a lot of heartache when the first of our family was diagnosed with the disease. But then we started opening up and it's just so much easier to have the extra help that family provides sometimes. You share the pain a little that way, so good on your for resolving to chnage patterns and help your daughter.
