Egg Creams and Congueros

During the summer of 1997, I had two beliefs in mind. Being fresh out of college gave me this air of idealism about life and people. The first belief was that as a twenty-two year old college graduate, I needed to build up a networking base for my budding business as a wedding musician and private teacher. Even now, this is not an unreasonable ( Read more... )

Ah! This was very relate-able..it's kind of annoying when people don't take you seriously just because you belong to a certain gender. I loved the conclusion and am glad about the changing scenario worldwide..:) *fingers crossed*

P.S. Enjoyed the link you shared. Hilarious..:D

A creative take on the prompt and an interesting story. I'm surprised there were such bubbles of safety from the foolishness of sexism associated with your time in school. This was a very enjoyable entry.

College does lead to some unrealistic beliefs! I loved your description of the bad "date" and I also enjoyed the link. It sounds like you were a very practical person coming out of college with your plans to create a career. This was such a fun read!

I went through something like this myself, after college-- not for networking, exactly, but that persistent belief that it was possible to have friends of the opposite sex who were just friends. It's hard to tell how that would have gone had I not moved to Illinois for three years. The sexism there was from a kind of 1950s bubble in a lot of ways, and very little of that region resembled the "real world" I was used to growing up in another culture.

You know, I first heard about egg creams from "Harriet The Spy," and I always thought they sounded disgusting. The lack of egg and the presence of chocolate was never mentioned, so it always seemed like some kind of awful custard drink!

That guy you were on a not-date date with, though... a bozo, in any time or place. Wow.

Part of me thinks that it's better now because I moved to California. Then again, I recently watched an episode of 'Master of None' that pretty much indicates things haven't changed at all, and that makes me sad.

I could never get into chocolate soda for the same reason. Once, I tried a chocolate martini, and was very disappointed.

The name egg cream always makes me gag too. I wonder if they called it that because many of the alcoholic drinks from the 20s actually did have egg in them. Of course, Orange Julius used to have egg in their drinks too, and I liked those as a kid.

Thanks for affirming things for me. I think we are often conditioned to find that sort of behavior endearing, and after fifteen years, I still can't.
