Miss Otis Regrets

A/N: Miss Otis Regrets is the title of a song written by Cole Porter in 1934. The lyrics are the story of a society woman who is lynched by a vengeful mob after she shoots her unfaithful lover. Her servant offers Miss Otis' apology to an unknown friend for missing their appointment: "Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch ( Read more... )

What a wonderful story.

What I like is that you have Booth down pat. He doesn't really ever steer her toward any conclusion; it's more that he makes sure she's seeing the whole picture. From there, she almost always makes the correct decision.

I also really appreciate the subtle way that you've presented them as a couple. It's realistic and yet still very satisfying.

I'm so glad you wrote this. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you for your very kind words on my first review. Booth's voice is important to me. He seems to me to be an admirable shepherd rather than whip-cracker. I see a big difference between subtlety and fence-straddling. I think B&B could do a long-term low key relationship w/o imploding in careful hands.

This was a perfect post-ep! I could totally see this happening in real life - Brennan is much more reserved when it comes to science unlike VNM, and it is so like her to withdraw. I like that Booth was the one who got her to re-think it, and that VNM's memory will be preserved by her presenting the data. Awesome job! I particularly liked the bookending with the two different, yet so similar emails.

Thank you. Despite some of the weird stuff Brennan spouts when she's throttled in the writers' hands, I think the original character understood science and its society. So I'm glad you saw that in my tale. As for the bookends, I wrote those 2 sections first, then filled in the middle of the Oreo.

Oh excellent, and so touching. I loved that you went there with this piece, FM. At first I thought Booth was trying to guide Brennan in post-death appropriate behavior but her reluctance to take credit for Vincent's work was completely in character. That Booth provided a way for her to honor him was a credit to his heart and their relationship. That she understood and accepted it was a credit to hers.

The intimate scene in the kitchen, hinting at the aftermath of what happened between them? Well done.

Hope this makes sense. I'm trying to recreate my comments as I wrote them first on my smartphone. Apparently, it's actually a hungryphone because it ate my comments!

Thanks for posting!

Thank you. I hoped that someone would find their heart touched by my story. I think of Booth as the Good Shepherd rather than Moses. He shows Brennan a path and puts her feet upon the trail. And I'm glad you enjoyed the intimacy of the kitchen scene. I wanted it to be "low key."

Well congratulations first of all on your first story...Very well done. I loved it...Found it sad and poignant too...Love how Booth was trying to coax her into presenting VNM's findings...I feel it was as much for himself as for her...Someone else might have pulled the trigger but we all know the 'Booth guilt'...Have to love how we are all wondering just what happened on the romance front for these two but yet you get a feeling that they are 'together' in this...How she is in his apartment when he gets home and how she ends up going off to prepare food...

Again, well done! Looking forward to more from you...

Thank you. As you point out Booth needs to coax when it comes to Brennan; but I hadn't really considered before you mentioned it just how much he had invested in her actions himself. Yet the look on his face after Vincent died under his hands was certainly a clue. It would be great IMHO if they could just be 'together' in the show w/o some huge fanfare.

I was just thinking yesterday that Brennan and Vincent would never do the presentation they were so enthusiastic about. True it hardly matters in comparison with what came after, but I'm glad you chose to address it.

I agree with hpaich, Booth's behavior is IC and I also like the subtlety with which you show us how Booth's and Brennan's relationship has developed.

Miss Otis, or maybe that should be her servant, has class. Which is more than can be said about Miss Otis' lover.

I just noticed I start every reply with 'thank you', so this is my official "change-it-up". Thank you. I make no secret that Booth is my favorite character in the Bones universe, and I like to think that I understand him (or what I wish he was); so I'm pleased I captured his voice. And I think B&B would be circumspect and a bit subtle in their daily lives: they're not kids anymore.
