Last night’s big Cornell Woolrich triple feature turned into a quadruple feature when Eddie Muller arranged to rescreen Suddenly. Good thing I was dressed down to go the distance and brought along a picnic dinner

First in line was Phantom Lady, one of my personal faves.

I didn't stay for SUDDENLY, but as I was watching the Woolrich films I wondered how many people in the audience have read the books (and story) they were based on? Was I the only one ( ... )

It's pretty standard for books to be radically altered when adapted, especially back then, when there were all sorts of strange requirements about what was and was not allowed in film. Look at In A Lonely Place, for example. It's one of my all time favorite films, but it couldn't be more different than the also excellent novel. Even the big guns like Hammett, Chandler and Cain got rewritten. I always try not to judge a film against the original novel and look at it as it's own unique thing.

Your writeups have really fueled my interest in film noir. Watched quite a number of them recently, and have enjoyed them immensely.

I cheered to when Bobby Driscoll got punched out. Just as annoying as Brandon De Wilde in 'Shane'....who I wish Jack Palance turned his sights on.....
