Tanning Salons daisy_2801 January 17 2007, 20:26:28 UTC
I'm fat and I have been to several different tanning salons in my area. I was always a little nervous going in but I have never been treated with anything but kindness and respect. Good luck!

Will you be on-stage? If so, get an opaque face powder and that will work fine to cover shiny patches.
Or! You could wear a long sleeved T-shirt in a color that would compliment your open back choli and wear the choli over it. Or a skin colored t.
The best belly dancer I've seen is easily a size 28 with not perfect chocolate colored skin. But when she moves, you really don't notice her skin because you're busy watching her dancing!
Whatever you choose, smile big and work it and few will notice anything but your joy.

I was going to suggest a skin collored unitared (try http://www.riversedgedancewear.com/womplussizda.html) with your outfit on top.

I think it might be worthwhile to approach your dance instructor and ask HER if she knows of any resources for choli tops (patterns or premade) that don't have open backs or bell sleeves. As an instructor, she might just know. *grin* She might also have had students with this issue before. In any case, it would make her aware of what is going on with you and that is always a valuable thing in a student-teacher relationship.

Otherwise, I don't think spray tan will conceal your skin issues. It might make the stretch marks less visible, but there's not any way to tell, really, how your skin will take to the spray tan. I know a real tan can lessen the appearance of stretch marks, but that comes with its own issues.

It seems like you ought to be able to find something like a sheer body stocking that comes up high enough in the back. Try Hips and Curves -- I'd search for you, but it's blocked by my firewall at work ( ... )

We have to have our hair up (again with the fire, we're doing turns in very close proximity to each other so we can set each other on fire as well as ourselves). I was thinking about getting a real tan but I am of course worried about skin issues that might cause by itself!

My instructor actually hasn't been the greatest resource since she is very thin herself, and the choli pattern she has and says she would give me to use is one with an open back. A body stocking is probably going to be my best bet.

And I'm not sure of what kind of setup we'll be performing in but I do know that most people won't care. However if I'm not comfortable with how I look that's definitely going to affect my dancing.

Fire dancing in close proximity to one another? That will look really neat, but, yeah, I understand the fire risk.

It's your instructor's responsibility, honestly, to make sure she is educated on the issues that affect her students. Keep her in the loop. She might not be a good resource but if she ever has another plus-size or otherwise body-conscious person in her class, the knowledge might come in useful for her.

And, oh, yes, you have to be comfortable. I'm not suggesting otherwise. The distance might provide an extra layer of comfort, however, because how you look to you up-close is going to be different from how you look at a distance. Before the performance, whatever cover-up method you choose, see if you can get a picture or video taken from the approximate distance where the audience will be sitting. Having an accurate idea of what they are going to be able to see might help YOU be more comfortable with what you see. *smile*

For covering up the belly and lower back, I'd suggest a body stocking. I think Danskin has some leotards that would work.

I'm not sure who has closed cholis for sale (I always get my cholis from Fat Chance, and those are open in the back). However, you can go to Target, Ross, etc, and search around the juniors or thin-lady depts for a long sleeved shirt with some elasticity. I usually wear an open-backed choli, but sometimes instead I just wear a cropped tight shirt with long sleeves. You can just cut off the bottom (if it doesn't come short) and hem or add some trim.

Some of my favorite "cholis" are just shirts from the Juniors dept.

Lastly, what style? If you're of the Tribal or Fusion variety, you can always throw on a fishnet top (or tights with the crotch cut out for your head) under your open-backed choli.

I don't know how much time you have but for the KP and back scarring consider going to a Dermatologist and getting some prescription lotion. Alternatively, a drugstore lotion with a high concentration of salicylic acid will help with the KP. Exfoliate gently in the shower (just use a cotton wash cloth) and then apply the lotion daily.

Good luck with your performance :) It sounds like it's going to be beautiful !
