I peeked through the tags, but I might have missed something.

I have limited mobility and stamina right now, but I really want to learn latin dancing, and I don't want to wait until I'm fit enough to actually enroll in a class.  Does anyone have a dvd or video that's a particular favorite?  I learned the cha cha longer ago than I want to admit, ( Read more... )

If you live near a university, I'd look to see if they have a Ballroom and/or Latin dance club. These are very low key, welcome the general public, and if you can stand for 30 minutes, then you should be able to do a beginner lesson. The DVDs I've tried have taught you do a specific routine, not to actually learn the basic steps and how to put them together in different ways.

I live in the greater Boston area. You can't swing a stick without hitting a secondary education institution. This is a fabulous idea, thank you!

Definitely seconding the suggestion to look for a college/university dance lessons (everyone and their uncle seems to have salsa classes where I am!), but if you do want a DVD, I really like the "Salsa... Solo!" DVD from World Dance New York. There's a breakdown of the steps from a very very basic level, and a lot of repetition, at various speeds, which is very useful for just getting the movements into your muscle memory. It's not hugely energetic - I don't even break a sweat - so it shouldn't be too tough on you!

I started dance three years ago, and it is now my life. I do salsa, bachata, merengue, some really basic chacha, samba de gafeira, and zouk! Ask me anything you like, I started out as a really scared nervous ball of wibble and... well, now I dance about fourteen hours a week, and this year I started to teach ( ... )
