OOTDIY: Gathered skirt action

May 06, 2010 11:08

One of my goals this year is to become a better sewer (sewist?). I'm in the process of making a dress from a vintage pattern, and I PROMISE I'm working on that too, but it is really slow going, what with the tracing the pattern out and adjusting the size up to fit me... so I thought I'd try something a little simpler ( Read more... )

Sew cute (...yeah, ok, that was two-thirds of a pun: p-u). And I think the word is seamstress?

Thank you!

What about boy sewists? Are they seamsters? That's kind of cool sounding.

also, did you use a serger? i haven't been able to buy one yet, but i'm afraid to make things like this in fear that it won't hold :/

I didn't - I don't have one. I just used pinking shears on the open seams - but the only open seams on this garments are the two side seams, the bottom edge is selvedge, and the waistband folds over all the raw edges at the top.

That said, the side seams did unravel a TON in the wash. I may zig-zag stitch them in the future. That's kind of like serging... for folks that don't have a serger.

oh, yeah! i knew what zig-zag stitches were and i use them, just i wasn't sure if you used them and went without a serger or what. i'm on the look out for a serger under 200$!

I could just hug and kiss you a million times... The skirt looks great on you, and I just bought fabric to try making this skirt! I promise I'll post pics when I get it done!

P.S. Did you put a zipper in yours?

Thank you! Please do post pics!

I did put a zipper in - it's on the side seam. I forgot to take pics of it... because it was a super frustrating process because I didn't iron it flat enough and so I kept stitching into the teeth of the zipper, and then having to rip out the seams and do it again. I was so ready to be done with this skirt. :)
