Fat tribal belly dancing?

Mar 16, 2009 01:25

Hi! So here's my question. I really want a tribal belly dancing costume, but I am 1) poor (why is this stuff so frakkin' expensive?!) and can't really sew, and 2) I have boobies and can't find a pre-made bra top that's larger than a 34 B, which is annoying ( Read more... )

The woman in the following link isn't a fattie, HOWEVER, she has an AWESOME tutorial for making your own costumes out of thrifted tacky dresses and old bras :D :D

Her latest project, (shown in link) is totally cool to look at! I'm thinking of trying something like that just for kicks and giggles

Jesus. That's some elaborate-ness. I swear that my instructor has worn things like the original dress, but thank god she's moved on to what the finished product looks like. I swear, some cabaret dancers just cannot stay off the sequins. It's like their preferred drug. "Just one...more...bugle bead..."

I have at least one BBW bellydance thing in my communities page, plus there are Tribes and Yahoogroups all devoted to those of us who are fat dancers :-)

When my mother had short hair and was dancing, she had a lot of really nice headbands with dangly bits. She still uses them but there's less of an effect with shoulder length hair vs the cropped do she had.

My biggest challenge for making a costume is finding a bra in size 36J. I can't find anything padded or convertable or appropriate for turning into a costume bra.

What's a giganto-boobed girl to do?

Man, I can't even imagine the difficulties. Were I in your (giant, floaty, boobilicious) boat, I'd go with a choli made with sari fabric. That way it's still pretty, but you can wear a bra under it and be all supported.

And here I am, all concerned about making a choli and finding that it has no support and then wah-ing.

I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but I'm a size 38J and I'm selling off a few of my costumes at http://www.miasia.org/Sales.html.

Wow! Those costumes aren't quite what I'm looking for but they are stunning!

Oh I'm so jealous about your course. My teacher does cabaret (OH THE SEQUINS), so that's fun.

And is your icon a sewing machine needle...sewing? I can't stop watching it. My mom designs and sews for like...a job. It's pretty embarrassing that I can't really sew, but most of that is probably due to a lack of practice. Anywho.

I think that my main concern about the hair thing is that I am the only girl in my class with hair above the shoulder, and every tribal costume that I've really loved has involved long hair, but I think I'd look like a tool in falls.
