"Leaving Islam" Campaign - What's missing from this picture?

Jun 02, 2010 23:52

American Atheists have provided an epic article about the "Leaving Islam" campaign and why atheists shouldn't be too happy about it. The article is posted on the Richard Dawkins website. Unfortunately it's way too long and the comments on the Richard Dawkins website suggest that most people reading it haven't understood how dodgy the FDI really are ( Read more... )

I'm not so sure the first port of call would be the police. It's more complicated when it's family. Some people might prefer to call a center of some sort instead of the police over spousal abuse, since getting the police involved ups the stakes a lot. Some people wouldn't be ready to throw an important central family figure in prison over being hit and/or yelled at some. A lot of families would entirely side against someone who did that.

Also, you can't really call the cops if the threats are coming from overseas. And it's not like you can pre-emptively arrest your whole family because you don't know what they'll do if you come out. I don't even know what the cops would do if all you had was some concerns that someone might get violent if they knew about you. Maybe nothing, and then you'd piss people off.

Spousal abuse is not the same as death threats in your community or a fatwa, is it?

You know, I was watching Colbert last night and Ayaan Ali was one. She was basically saying that Christians ought to proselytize the hell out of American Muslims because "some ideas are better than others". She would rather they were Christian than Muslim, I guess. My face was like O_O. It was bizarre!

Here's the link to the interview. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/309925/june-01-2010/ayaan-hirsi-ali

The video doesn't seem to work. I think because I'm in the UK, it's not available.

Firstly, guilt by association is no guilt at all, in the vast majority of cases. The exception is Muslims who associate with known terrorists in mosques. If the BNP denies all association with SIOE why mention it? I can tell you for certain there are no links between SIOE and the BNP.

Secondly, leaving Islam is a capital offence under sharia law. Understandably some people are reluctant to leave Islam. Instead of having a go at SIOA try reading about the plight of non-Muslims in Islamic countries like Bangladesh, the Lebanon, Egypt.... well....all of them actually.

Is stoning a woman to death for being raped left wing or right wing. No critic of SIOE has been able to answer this question, but the same critics are quick to call us "fascists" and "far right".

Isn't it obvious? Because I find it funny that the SIOE are so obnoxious and right-wing that even the BNP doesn't want to be associated with them.

Secondly, leaving Islam is a capital offence under sharia law.

Then why is the focus on countries which don't have sharia law?

Is stoning a woman to death for being raped left wing or right wing.

Either way it is illegal and any Muslim who does it in Europe will be punished for it. I don't know of any politician in Europe anywhere on the political spectrum who would disagree with this, regardless of their religious background.
